First Two exciting announcements from Cambridge Community TV for the month of September: Our next Orientation is happening on September 1, and our annual Backyard BBQ Fundraiser for CCTV's Youth Media Program will take place on September 17th! 1. CCTV Orientation: If you've ever been interested in getting involved at CCTV - whether that means taking classes in media production, hosting your own TV show, or crewing on a production -- the first step is to attend an Orientation, and the next one will be on Tuesday, September 1st, at 6:30pm, at CCTV, located at 675 Mass Ave, in Central Square Cambridge. Orientation is free, there's no commitment or RSVP needed, so just stop by and learn how you can take advantage of this community resource to learn new skills, have fun, and communicate about the issues that are important to you! 2. Kaya Hotel, (up Mass Ave. toward Arlington, where the Kaya restaurant now resides). It will have something like 45-50 rooms (small), be 3-4 stories high, underground parking, and a restaurant. Talking about starting it this fall, but we have not seen any final plans. There is also supposed to be a small hotel w restaurant built at the corner of Sommerville Ave and 'Beacon St., but not sure where it stands. That is technically Sommerville. If Lesley/AIB gets built, these two hotels, the St.James/Oaktree condos get built, it will be a busy, congested 2-3 years around here, and a transformed landscape. Also, the public housing development near Alewife is scheduled to be demolished, and something more suitable to the area built with mixed housing. Note: The meeting was last night! Go to the website to see the tentative plans. We toured the church, which is beautiful, but it, and especially the slate roof and the underground room under the church front door, is in desperate need of repair. The rest of the buildings should be torn down to start over. So the church wants to work out a compromise plan with Oaktree (who bought the car wash and will build condos in any case) and the land the church brings to the party (and what it could build alone), as well as a community garden. My opinion is that something will be built there and it would be nice to have them work together to build something tasteful, while modern, in keeping with the materials and roof lines of the church, keeping the community garden for everyone, and allowing the church to continue working with the homeless, the underfed, the youth groups, etc. that they do now. The church does not want to build to max, wants to be a good neighbor, and is interested in having this be a green project. I suggested they consider a green roof for the very top floor for a garden like area, and avoid balconies, which pose the issue of looking into the neighboring yards/bedrooms. The neighbors, of course, are worried about traffic on Beech St (already terrible). The city does not want entrance/exit on Mass Ave (which the neighbors want/I don't think that the church and Oaktree do). They are also worried about massing/density and setbacks.
