Re: Lincoln Way renovations Dear Neighbors; I wanted to let you know I met with a number of officials involved with the Lincoln Way renovations that are about to be undertaken. Some of you may have been notified about a meeting I am organizing for May 6th at 7pm to discuss how the city will work with the Cambridge Housing Authority to support and respond to concerns related to traffic and construction issues that may impact residents and the neighborhood. In my meeting I asked for several issues to be addressed prior to the community meeting as to provide our neighborhood with the most information and effective tools to manage any disruption that might be experienced due to the renovations. At this meeting we will receive a packet that will include a visual site map that overlays the timing of construction events, a contact person for the neighborhood to reach out to for any issues that arise during the renovations, and a regularly scheduled on-site meeting for residents to drop-in if they have issues, questions or concerns they would like to address with the General Contractor. For those of you who find the internet more convenient I have asked for a website to be set up to keep residents updated about the project. This website will also be a place where we can email questions and concerns. If you have any questions ahead of time that you would like addressed please feel free to email them to me before the meeting. I hope this is helpful and look forward to seeing you. Be careful! I don't know how many of you noticed the car on Upland, several weeks back, with all 4 wheels stolen, and a few days later I saw another one (missing all its wheels) being towed into the service station on Huron/Concord. And, as reported earlier, UPS packages left on porches going missing. Please report anything you see, or experience, to the police. With all of the information, they can at least id a pattern. In most incidents it involves the theft of an unattended bag or items being taken from within a bag. Below are some tips to remember when you sit down in public place to protect your belongings. Tips for the Prevention of Theft These crimes are crimes of opportunity and can be easily prevented. Be aware of your surroundings as well as your belongings to keep yourself from being a target. Never leave your belongings unattended. Even if it is just for a moment, that's all it takes. Do not leave you purse or backpack open or unzipped. Use the zippers and snaps to protect your belongings inside. There have been reports of people having their wallets stolen out of their bag even when their bag is on them. Do not leave your bag on the back of your chair. It can be very easy to slip it off without you noticing. You are better off leaving it on your lap, on the table, or in between your feet where you can feel it. If you do become a victim of such a crime, please report it to police, even if nothing significant was taken. In December 2009, Mayor Denise Simmons and a citizens' organizing committee convened the first Cambridge Climate Congress of 100 delegates reflecting the great diversity of Cambridge and asked them to make recommendations for how the citizens, organizations, businesses, institutions, and municipal government should respond to the emergency. The City's responses to climate change date back to 2002, and we have made significant progress since that time. However, climate science now informs us that we must take swifter, bolder action in order to protect the planet for our children and our grandchildren. If we fail to act immediately, we face the risk of a global environmental catastrophe that will be marked by tremendous suffering and loss of life. That is why this is an emergency. --Mayor Denise Simmons, November 2009 On Saturday March 6, 2010, in its third and final session an overwhelming majority of the Climate Congress endorsed an appeal for all "the citizens, organizations, businesses, and institutions that call Cambridge home to join in a civic response to the Climate Emergency and work ...with the City government to implement climate protection actions and policies. " To spread this appeal, the Congress formed a Climate Emergency Action Group (CEAG) of the undersigned citizen activists. All of us who live or work in Cambridge will need to do our part to help meet Cambridge's goal, fulfill our community's obligation, and help solve the problem of climate change. This will require a prompt and sustained response. We need your help with this effort and ask you to please designate a climate emergency response leader or leaders within your organization. (The Climate Congress has also asked our City government to do this.) In a small organization, it might be a member of the board who takes on this responsibility. While the exact roles of climate emergency response leaders will depend on the needs and capabilities of their organizations, they will include promoting awareness and response to the emergency within their organization and coordinating with citywide efforts. We are inviting climate emergency response leaders to help us plan a citywide Climate Emergency awareness campaign to be launched in late spring or early summer. Please let us know who is selected for this important position in your organization. The CEAG is convening a meeting with designated climate emergency leaders from different organizations to share ideas, experiences, and concerns but primarily to help plan the citywide awareness campaign. Crime in the neighborhood

Neighbors, Perhaps some of you noticed the Subaru with all four wheels missing on Upland Rd near Mt. Pleasant St. I do not know the details, but that is pretty brazen. There was also an attempted breakin on Mt. Pleasant St. recently. Please remember that nice weather (following the rain) also brings out the thieves. Some of the best ways to prevent such break ins are: *Use your alarm, or get a system installed, and use it. *Lock windows and doors * Cut shrubbery away from the house *Turn on your outside lights at night to make the thieves more visible. *Keep your eyes and ears open, on your own yard, and your neighbors. *Call the police if you see anything suspicious.
