Dewey Square Ramrod grim plain-clothes cops, standing like debt, dome tents and canopies, blue plastic tarps, discolored and smudged like a street woman's topcoat, boxes of carrots, battered apples piled up containers of supermarket bread, scribbled on cardboard, people in clumps arguing, praying, airing their tents from last night's rain. a sukkot, a stage, duct tape a T-shirted apple eyed string quartet plays early Beethoven, canticle, call and response lapping through waves of discourse and demand, a portable bigger-than life size plaster statue of Gandhi, everything bronzed including the eyeglasses down on his nose tied by a cord to what might be a light post a shawl of Indian cotton around his shoulders, gold entwined in the red figured weave, his right hand open, held shoulder high, and a Johnson's Band Aid wrapped tightly around the thumb of his left as if in all of us running to grab his hand and hold on, we had rubbed the skin raw and we fixed it with whatever we had around. We still need him.

(Blake is the short street between Orchard and Mass Ave with the fire house on one side and the gas station on the other side). Karen Geez, sorry to pass on more neighborhood crime news... A tenant living on Blake Street was mugged last night at approximately 9:50. He was walking down Blake Street toward Orchard pulling his suitcase and a backpack when (I believe several men) grabbed his backpack, punching him in the face. They ran off toward Orchard Street. Many of us heard his screams for help and called police who arrived shortly and several cruisers combed the neighborhood for the guys. If any of you find a backpack in your yards leave it and call Cambridge Police right away. The Police went off in search of the guys but I know sometimes they go through the bags and toss them when done. The victim is a student and his wallet and some important documents were in the backpack. Pass it on... Janet Malenfant

The Temple Place project is part of a $64.5 million statewide investment in expanding affordable housing options and creating construction jobs across Massachusetts. The federal low income housing tax credits and the MA Department of Housing and Community Development housing subsidies together will create 42 affordable units for individuals and families, including at least four extremely low income families, participating in the "Moving to Work" program with the Cambridge Housing Authority. The project is expected to create 102 jobs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Supplemental Budget As House Chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs, I worked with fellow legislators to ensure that nursing home leaves of absence (also known as bed holds) were funded. This ensures that elders in nursing homes who must leave for short period of time can return to their home.
