Machine Match Draws Crowd at MIT | Cambridge Community Television Folks, I just posted a new story to the CCTV website about the three-day man vs. computer match on "Jeopardy!" continuing tonight and tomorrow and MIT"s role in the development of I.B.M.'s "Watson." The first round drew a big crowd at MIT last night, along with an IBM researcher who was part of the development team and had great stories about the strengths and goofs of the computer in test games. Erin McClean, a BU undergraduate who won last year's college Jeopardy! contest, also spoke and had tips for anyone who might want to be a contestant on the game show. I think most of the MIT people are rooting for Watson, but I'm with her--I'd like a human win. Please check it out if you get a chance. Over the past year, working on issues related to the character and identities of Cambridge neighborhoods, we've been constantly reminded of how much Cambridge has changed over the last 50 years. Change is a fact of life but the city can benefit greatly from a long-term strategy for smart growth and development. In that spirit, this spring the committees that we chair - Neighborhood and Long Term Planning, and Economic Development - are hosting an event to reflect on past change and create a vision for the future. We are reaching out because we'd like input from those most affected by Cambridge's constant evolution, its residents. Over the past few months, we've worked with the Cambridge Historical Society, the Historical Commission, and the Community Development Department to pull together photo retrospectives showing how Cambridge has changed over the past 20, 50, 100 years. To compliment these portraits of the past, we are asking Cambridge artists to take their own snapshots of our city and to draw, picture, or generate what they think that same spot will look like in the future. There are no strict rules besides to envision how Cambridge residents will shop, travel, and interact in 20, 50, or 100 years. Pictures or computer generated graphics submitted by Cambridge residents will be displayed at the hearing and entered in to Cambridge's permanent record. It will be a living time capsule of sorts. We will also be able to display the artwork in City Hall and are working on finding a prize for the audience favorite. Can you please help us spread the word to artists (or anyone with an artistic bent) in your neighborhoods? The woodland, located between Cambridge, Belmont and Arlington, spans the region's Native American, agricultural and industrial history. The 15 acre forest, which includes wetland and marsh areas, is targeted for deforestation by developers in order to create a large apartment complex. The adjacent Reservation is home to coyote, otter, fox, deer, and over 90 bird species that require the forest's diverse habitat for their survival. Development displaces natural absorption by the maples, sending millions of gallons of storm water runoff with each rainfall into an already taxed Little River/Alewife Brook waterways system. These high flows and pollutants from the building and parking lots increase the risk of contamination and flooding for downstream communities, as storm water moves towards the Mystic River and Boston Harbor. Deforestation means a rare wildlife refuge gem, easily accessible for education and recreation via the Alewife T, will be permanently eliminated. The towns of Belmont, Arlington and city of Cambridge have the option to buy the property, but need support from the Governor and State Agencies to halt permits until the neighbors have their day in Superior Court soon.
