I just wanted to pass on the persons to call at the PD. There was another case further up Uplan Rd., on the other side of the road. I think she didnt see it 1) because it was a couple of years ago or 2) that is considered Avon Hill, a different neighborhood, an arbitrary distinction. The victim of this robbery was walking home from a fiends house at 12:30am and was attacked by three males who took her purse. As of this date this appears to be an isolated incident. We strongly suggest that residents be cautious when traveling alone at night and make every attempt to get a ride or travel in groups. Kathy Murphy Community Relations (617)349-3204 Basic Street Safety Tips Be aware of your surroundings at all times and trust your instincts if you think you are in an area in which you should not be, you probably are. Know where you're going and the safest way to get there, particularly when moving about the city during hours of darkness. Walk in well traveled, well lighted areas avoiding short cuts through public parks, construction sites, alleys and parking lots. Have a plan of action in mind: decide where you would go and what you would do should some dangerous situation occur. If living in the city, know where the nearest police/fire station is located, how to contact the police or a friend in the event of an emergency, what establishments are open late where you could seek refuge if needed, etc. Walk with confidence on the street and at a good, steady pace. Keep your head up and observe your surroundings don't look down at the ground. If going out on the town for a night of drinking/partying, strongly consider taking a taxi to your planned destination and to return to your residence. When going out, tell a roommate or friend where you're going and the approximate time you expect to return. Whenever possible, travel with a friend, or better still, with a group of friends. Carry a whistle or similar type of noise maker. In the event of an emergency, the sound may scare off a would be attacker. Unless you are properly trained, carrying mace is not recommended. Keep purses and packages tucked securely between your arms and body. Don't overload yourself with packages and bags it is distracting and it can make you look defenseless. Carry only what you need. Don't carry a large amount of cash or numerous credit cards and avoid wearing flashy and excessive amounts of jewelry. Take special care when jogging or biking. Vary your route. Go with a friend. Avoid isolated areas and don't wear headphones. Exercise caution when using ATM machines. Only use ATMs located in well lit, well trafficked areas those physically located in stores are the safest. If you're being followed: Show you are suspicious turn to look at the person. It sends a clear message that you will not be taken by surprise.

Zoe Anderson 36 Walker Catarina - Domestic Short Hair Grey Tabby, Spayed Female, 13 years old Catarina is a sweetheart. She is very affectionate and loves to play; she's equally happy to sit on your lap purring like mad or chase toys and sunbeams. She has a lovely, silky grey tabby coat with very pretty white socks. She can be chatty if you talk back to her, but is generally quiet. She is quite well trained - she knows the word "no" and responds equally well to a short hand clap - and comes when called. Catarina was adopted by a young couple when she was 4 months old and is beloved. Since then, the couple has gotten married and had children. Catarina didn't like babies, but she became quite fond of the children once they were old enough to pet her quietly. One of the children has developed serious cat allergies and asthma, which is why the family would like to find a new home for her. Catarina does not like loud noises and would be happier in a home without small children. She is not crazy about dogs, either, but she would tolerate one who isn't interested in playing with her. She is an entirely indoor cat, and would be a perfect companion in a quiet household. Hi Elizabeth I am very sorry to hear - and that you have experienced such a nasty thing done to your car. I do however find it hard to imagine - having lived here for 15 years that any of the neighbors that I can think of would have done that, no matter how short tempered people have gotten about this winter. On the other hand there have been cases of random vandalism like someone took a hood ornament from Kelly's car, so not to minimize what happened and it may have just been something like that. Hi Everyone, I thought (belatedly) that it might be a good idea to let you all know that I have a new car. I'm Elizabeth, Angela's tenant at #15, and you've probably seen me digging out a white volvo this winter. Now you'll see me digging out a black audi wagon. I'm introducing the car because someone let the air out of the tires last night. I know parking is difficult around here; I've certainly dug out enough spaces this winter to know that. I hope this was just a misunderstanding by someone who didn't realize that I've been here contributing to the on-going digging out against the snow. Thank you. Elizabeth

Tuesday, February 15th 6:30pm Citywide Senior Center- Central Square Cuban refreshments will be served. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half - and food by 80% - people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardeners. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that hs faced such a crisis - the massive reduction of fossil fuels - is an example of options and hope. The first is Green Streets Initiative, which encourages alternative means of transportation and among other activities is co-sponsoring a contest to name this winter's best shoveled block in Cambridge (if there were a contest to name the best-cleared crosswalk, I suspect Beech and Elm would come in dead last). The second is a new initiative called "Harvard on the Move," which in sponsoring weekly group runs and walks originating in Harvard Square, as well as planned workshops and lectures.
