Eastern Daylight Time Subj: [NorthCommons] CPD Warns Residents about Potential Scam ADVISORY: CPD Warns Residents about Potential Scam Involving Thieves Posing as Water Department Employees to Gain Entrance into Homes October 27, 2012 - A Huron Avenue resident reported that, around 4 p.m. on October 24, a male came to her front door and presented himself as someone from the Water Department who needed to check the water connections under her sink. She let the male inside her home, he checked under the sick, and a short time later she discovered her wallet missing from her bedroom dresser. Cambridge Police have not seen other recent reports of activity of this type, but surrounding communities have occasionally experienced similar scams dealing with people posing as utility workers, offering tree cutting services, etc. With the possibility of a large storm affecting the area next week which could cause flooding, Cambridge Police are sending this advisory to remind residents to beware of possible scams where people may pose as water department employees stating they need to check if there is flooding in the basement. These individuals typically target elderly residents. Residents can protect themselves by always demanding to see proper identification before allowing any unknown person inside their home. If the person cannot produce identification, do not let them in. If residents exper ience this type of activity, they are encouraged to report it to the Cambridge Police Department immediately by calling 617-349-3300. Neighborhood cats

A very nasty and noisy cat fight just occurred in my backyard at 140 Upland Road. One participant is a solid black cat that hangs around (too much) in my yard. The other is a fluffier spotted brown cat. A painter and I broke them up. There are tufts of fur on my patio and the collar of one of the cats. (See attached) Our goal is to get 1000 Cambridge resident signatures to present to the City Council by the end of October. As many of you know, the library is closed for an extended period on Sundays. Many of us have witnessed residents arriving at the library doors on Sunday, only to find them locked. As we discussed this at one of our meetings, we could not understand the rationale. Some think it is a budget issue but that theory has not been tested, and room has been found in the budget for other new items which may be less important. Some think it is the staff not wanting to work Sundays but that may not be the case as privately some staff have stated they would not object. Many residents work Saturday so Sunday is the only time they have access to the library. Many residents do not have Internet access at home and use the library for that purpose. One CRLS student when approached about the petition was eager to sign. She participates in track on Saturday and Sunday is her study day but the library is closed Sundays in September. At about 8:00 p.m., a 32-year- old woman was walking from the Davis Square MBTA station to a nearby address. She exited the station through the rear of the Holland Street side. She proceeded to walk up Dover Street toward Cambridge while talking on her cell phone when she was approached from behind by an unknown suspect who indecently assaulted her. The victim turned around, saw the suspect and screamed while running into the street. The suspect immediately fled in the direction of Davis Square. The victim was not injured and required no medical treatment. The victim described the suspect as a black male, about 6 feet tall, was wearing all black clothing and a black baseball cap. Somerville Police are advising anyone, but especially women who may be walking alone to take several commonsense safety precautions: * Try to walk on well-lighted routes whenever possible. * Avoid wearing headphones or ear- buds, and refrain from listening to loud music so that you are aware of your surroundings at all times. * Keep your cell phone accessible and avoid distracting phone calls. * If you think that someone is following you, try to get to a lighted area with other people. * Trust your instincts and avoid whatever feels to you like it could be a potentially dangerous situation or environment. Police have increased patrols of marked and unmarked cruisers in the Davis Square neighborhood.
