Hello- I am looking for a professional photographer (young-i.e.not outrageously expensive) to take pictures of some of my grandchildren with or without a parent, sort of an informal somewhat artsy family portrait to give as a gift. Dear Neighbors, Please follow the thread below from a Cambridge Public School Parents List Serve about some imposter magazine salesmen making the rounds and associated safety concerns. Henry and i think either the same individuals or individuals using similar tactics to those below rang our bell last week and then ran off when he answered..... When I told my family, I found out that the same thing happened at my house - last Friday afternoon about 4:30 pm. There was one person at the door, fitting the description, and our son answered the door and said we had friends over, so the man left. Our son looked out the window to see where he was going, and noticed a second, shorter man, also African American . My husband came home a short time later and they approached him outside the house. He felt uncomfortable and did not engage with them, and remembered that they were very aggressive. Sadly, I just reinforced with our kids who are teenagers that they still have to be careful about opening the door. I will come back another time”and got up and left. The next day I spoke to my sister-in-law who lives next doorand she said that a man fitting the same description approached her outside herhome. She stated that he was very aggressive and made her feel veryuncomfortable. She told him that she couldn’t talk with him and asked for awebsite for his company. He stated that they don’t have a website and don’ttake credit cards, cash only. He was later spotted on Green Street. Clearly, this man is a con artist and appears to be veryforceful. He certainly made both my elderly grandmother and my sister-in-lawfeel threatened. We notified the police. I don't know if he is working with anyone else or if he is working other areas. Silver Maple Forest — preservation effort by candidate for City Council, Kristen von Hoffmann

Dear Neighbors: Sharing with you a letter written about why preservation of the Silver Maple Forest is so vital — foremost, perhaps, in that it is instrumental in acting as a sponge during flooding and severe storms for Cambridge and surrounding towns, at a time when more severe storms and flooding is occurring. Kristen von Hoffmann, a new candidate for City Council — and a young woman whose candidacy I am supporting — attended the Silver Maple Forest Day of Action, a protest against cutting down the forest to enable new condominiums to be build. I am sharing her letter with you, as a way of alerting you to this proposed development plan and the community action and legal efforts underway to stop it. Also, this might for some of you be an introduction to Kristen von Hoffmann and her campaign (http://www.kristenforcambridge.com/) in which she is focusing on sustainability one of her three core issues (early childhood education and small business are the others.) Thanks for your kind attention, Melissa Ludtke 30 Buena Vista park On Friday, June 14th I attended the Silver Maple Forest Day of Action, a peaceful gathering organized by Green Cambridge, TROMP, and Friends of Alewife Reservation to protest cutting down the Silver Maple Forest in the Belmont Uplands adjoining the Alewife Reservation. Cutting down this forest would be required to build new condominiums that are part of the proposed development plan for this area. While we need to focus on planning for density in and near Cambridge, we must do so with the intent to create sustainable systems, and to build a city that can thrive well into the future. By sustainable, I mean a city that preserves critical aspects of Cambridge that are unique and special, while also accounting for elements that must change. Sustainability means building and planning with the natural environment in mind, and with respect to neighborhoods, businesses, and universities. When I look at an issue like the development of our precious, few remaining acres of wetlands, I am appalled. How can we be so short-sighted? We are living in a world, a city, and a context that demands leadership that will fight to preserve our precious remaining open spaces. We are living in a world that demands innovative leadership, not the status quo. Instead of destroying this forest, we need to think creatively about how to design for the future, and how to build housing in places that can accommodate new development with the least hazardous impact. Razing a beautiful and rare space such as the Silver Maple Forest and uprooting a rich wildlife corridor that runs through Cambridge, Belmont, and Arlington is simply unacceptable. The forest and wetlands are extremely important in the age of climate change, as they absorb water runoff after storms and flooding. As we are seeing greater increases in rainfall and more destructive storms, it is crucial to preserve this important open space that acts as a natural sponge and mitigates the effects of these storms. The citizen based Belmont Coalition and the Friends of Alewife Reservation are both plaintiffs in an active lawsuit to stop this development, and their continuous appeals have kept the forest intact so far. But time is running out. I urge you to contact your city councilors, town selectman and state legislators directly, and to ask them to stop this development from happening.
