And you'll find out what happened to us along the way. Some 35 years have passed since Judge Constance Baker Motley handed down her decision in the federal lawsuit, Ludtke v. Kuhn, that Time Inc. filed against Major League Baseball on my behalf. Her decision was the first to provide equal access for women reporters so they could interview players before and after games. As things turned out, those interviews were done in the teams' locker rooms, and that's a whole other part of the story that's told in this film. This is the first documentary film about this pioneering generation of women sports reporters, and it's part of ESPN's nine-part Nine for IX series of documentaries exploring women in sports 40 years after the passage of Title IX. "Let Them Wear Towels" -- Directed by Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern Film summary Lisa Olson was just trying to do her job as a reporter for the Boston Herald in 1990 when a group of New England Patriot players sexually harassed her in their locker room by exposing their genitals and making lewd and vulgar comments. Even though a subsequent NFL investigation concluded that Olson had been "degraded and humiliated," the 25-year-old continued to be tormented by Patriot fans -- so much so that she temporarily moved to Australia to resume her career. The incident touched off a national debate about the presence of female journalists in the male sanctum of the clubhouse. That debate should have been settled 12 years earlier, when Melissa Ludtke of Sports Illustrated successfully challenged Major League Baseball after she was kept out of the Los Angeles Dodgers' locker room during the 1977 World Series. Why has equal access for women reporters remained such a hot-button issue? That question is asked in "Let Them Wear Towels," a history and examination of females working in the man's world of the locker room. Through interviews with such pioneer women as Ludtke, Claire Smith, Lesley Visser and Christine Brennan, you'll hear stories of raw behavior and humorous retaliation, angry lawsuits and remarkable resolve .

I spoke with City Councilor Leland Cheung about my concern that the traffic on Mass Ave at the intersection of Upland Rd makes it very hard to cross the street. The cars going toward Arlington fill up the intersection, and pedestrians have to dart in between them. Mr. Cheung is going to bring this up at the next city council meeting July 29 and ask that the traffic and safety staff of the city look at the intersection (I wonder if we could possibly have a stop light before the crosswalk, timed with the next one?) So, September 1, October 1, November 1, would all work for lease start dates (though my preference would be for November, followed by October). 33 Richdale Ave at the PSNA meeting

This evening at the Porter Square Neighborhood Association meeting, the owner/developer of 33 Richdale Ave. presented exactly the same design proposal as they did at the Cambridge Historical Commission last week. Attached is a rendering of their proposed design. (This design was not well received by both the CHC and almost all of the attendees.) The architect and owner/developer defended their proposed design a bit more strongly than they had at the CHC meeting. The attendees at the PSNA meeting made the following comments (not a complete list). --> "The new building gobbles up the old building." --> "The historic remnant is lip service to preservation." --> "Have you thought of creating real lofts instead of ordinary apartments?" --> "How about putting a roof deck with pergola on the historic-building remnant to soften the look of the project?" --> "When will you start to present design alternatives to the community (instead of this design)?" It was a very respectful meeting, but I felt that the audience were the only people listening. The owner/developer and architect explained that they will need a special permit for the project including relief from the rear-yard setback zoning requirements and possibly other zoning requirements. They believe that they will not need a zoning variance. As they have accumulated 3 community meetings at the end of the PSNA meeting, the owner/developer and architect hope to proceed to a public hearing with the planning board in late August or early September. infestation of Black Swallow Wort along Upland Rd.

I had peered at the photos but still hadn't recognized some in my own yard until a friend pointed it out. This time of year the plant has seeds and pods that can detach and float along for blocks before reseeding. > > There's a huge amount of it along the right side chain-link fence @ 67 Upland if you want to see it up close. The elderly woman who lives there told this friend that she cannot deal with it. Does anyone know if the city would help this homeowner get rid of her infestation? I don't mean to single her out other than to see if there are ideas for getting rid of this particularly flourishing infestation. Most of the houses along Upland seem to have some Swallow Wort and this stuff multiplies like crazy. > > You need to dig out the whole root bed. Don't try to pull it out or it will just break off. Wear protective clothing: gloves, a long sleeve shirt, long pants, because some people are allergic to it. It gave me hives on my arms above the gloves similar to poison ivy. You need to dispose of the whole plant in the regular trash so it goes to a landfill, not the town compost which it would infect. Anything less that focuses on mitigation is to ignore the reality of recent events and our role in protecting the public from hazardous and often fatal avoidable accidents. Section 14 of Chapter 91 of the Legislature's final budget prohibits the operation of an ethanol storage or blending facility that plans to store or blend more than 5,000 gallons of ethanol per day within one mile of a Census block with a population density greater than 4,000 people per square mile. Ethanol is a highly flammable and volatile chemical, and poses a significant danger to our family and friends. Unable to be extinguished with traditional firefighting equipment, it would require our cities to invest in costly alcohol-resistant foam. The importance of maintaining this crucial amendment has been unfortunately demonstrated nationwide. In Tiskilwa, Illinois, the derailment of a 126-car train carrying ethanol required the complete evacuation of the nearly-800 person town. A Massachusetts Department of Transportation safety study estimated that an accident similar to the one experienced in Tiskilwa would require the evacuation of approximately 100,000 residents in Somerville, Cambridge, and surrounding communities. More recently, we were shocked by the tragic and horrific oil-train disaster that occurred last weekend in Lac-Megantic, Québec. The 73-car unit full of Bakken crude derailed in Québec, causing multiple tanker car explosions and more than 50 fatalities. I appreciate and thank Global Partners for responding to our communities' concerns and withdrawing its application to transport high volumes of ethanol through our towns. Residents have expressed their relief and their gratitude for both the inclusion of the amendment to Section 14, Chapter 91 and Global Partners' decision. However, regardless of Global Partners' decision to no longer pursue its plan, I request that you maintain the amendment as part of the final budget.
