33 Richdale Ave at the Planning Board

Dear Neighbors - Tuesday evening the Planning Board heard the presentation from the developer regarding their application for Special Permits to demolish most of 33 Richdale Ave. and build 54 rental units. The project would be 45 feet high and 300 feet long. Seventeen neighbors spoke against the project stating a broad range of cogent concerns (3-minute limit each). No one spoke in favor of the project given its current scale, configuration, density and impact on our neighborhood. At the end of the comments by the public, the Planning Board elected to defer their own discussion and comments until a subsequent meeting, possibly in a month. Prior to the hearing, the director of the Cambridge Historic Commission had sent a letter to the Planning Board expressing his opinion that 33 Richdale could be landmarked. Thanks to all the neighbors who were able to take the time this evening to attend the meeting and to those who took the additional time to put their thoughts together to speak. The next public hearings will be the follow-up meeting at the Planning Board and another meeting at the Cambridge Historical Commission. I'll post the meeting dates when they have been published. I encourage you to attend these meetings regarding a project which will have a big impact on our neighborhood. Carol - I don't know anyone there. I've been depending upon the psna email list and the buenavistasocialclub email list, which is centered around Buena Vista Park (at thetop of Cambridge Terrace). When the developer held their on initial abutters meeting back in June, they claimed they contacted everyone on a list provided by the city which encompassed any property within 200 feet. Oliver and I list a tad more than 200 feet from 33 Richdale.) So, I'm hoping that initial contact put them on notice. I wish that I knew someone there. Steve Stephen C. Though winter is a few months away, the Cambridge Commission for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) has scheduled a brown-bag lunch meeting on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3 from 12:30PM to 2PM in the 4th Floor Conference Room, 344 Broadway (City Hall Annex) to discuss ways we can keep our city sidewalks clear of snow and ice this winter. We are inviting representatives from DPW, Green Street Initiatives, the Cambridge Post Office, the Cambridge Neighborhood Associations, the Pedestrian Committee, the Cambridge Traffic, Parking and Transportation Department, TROMP, Cambridge Community Development Department, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and the Cambridge Business Associations as well as other organizations to join us in this discussion. We feel that it important to begin our planning early so please mark this meeting on your calendars. We do not know what the winter will be like this year. However, what we do know is that we want to be prepared. At our meeting, representatives from the DPW will describe their enhanced snow removal initiative as well as other protocols that will be in place when it snows. We hope to continue the ³Adopt and Sidewalk/Corner² initiative and would like to see the continuance of the ³Best Shoveled Sidewalk Contest". These initiatives, as well as any others that you might bring to the table, not only create a better sense of community but contribute to greater sidewalk accessibility for all residents. In order to make our efforts even more effective this winter we really need to know your ideas and recommendations, too.
