The following is an alert from the Somerville Police Department: Over the past three months, there have been three assaults on women in Somerville in the Union and Porter Square areas after dark in the evening hours and early nighttime. The Somerville Police Department is working to identify and apprehend the suspects as quickly as possible, and we wish to alert residents, especially women, to take safety precautions. On Sunday, January 12, 2014, a 45-year-old female was indecently assaulted on Hawkins St. near Somerville Avenue in the Union Square area. The suspect is described as a white Hispanic male, 25 to 30 years of age, approximately 5¹ 06² tall, with a medium build and brown eyes. This suspect was wearing a black zip-up sweater, a beanie cap with ear flaps, black tennis shoes, jeans and he was carrying a gray back pack. On Thursday, January 2, 2014, a 28-year-old female was indecently assaulted while walking on Porter St. between Summer St. and Highland Ave in the Porter Square area. The suspect is described as a white male, 20 to 30 years of age, 5¹-09² to 5¹-10² tall, with a thin-athletic build, and clean shaven. The suspect was wearing a red ski jacket with black under the armpits and dark pants. The suspect fled from Porter St. down Francis St. to Conwell St. This description closely resembles that of a suspect who committed a similar offense on Porter St. near Elm Street in the Porter Square area on November 18, 2013. Whether or not one suspect is responsible for both incidents remains under investigation. Any citizen with information regarding any of these assaults is asked to contact Sgt. Richard Lavey at the Somerville Police Department Family Services Unit at 617.625.1600 ext. 7237, or the Somerville Police Criminal Investigation Division 617.625.1600 ext. 7220. Police continue to take reports from our residences who appear to have been targeted by a prevalent phone extortion scam. 36 separate incidents have been reported in Cambridge over the past year, since February 14, 2013. Several neighboring jurisdictions, including Boston, also report a similar pattern. In almost all cases, unknown person(s) have called or texted the victim and made claims that a family member or loved one is being held captive and will be harmed or held until the victim pays a specific sum of money. In several cases, the party being held captive is alleged to have been in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in property damage that he/she is unable to pay for or personal injury to a third party, often times a relative of the caller. It is not uncommon for the caller to know basic details about the victim¹s life, including names of family members, places of employment and school information. It is possible that this information is gathered through internet searches or websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. In some cases, the caller phones several members of the same family, extracting information from one person that is then leveraged against a relative to increase the credibility of the caller¹s claims. Victims are often told that if they hang up or contact he police or anyone else, harm will come to their loved one. This scam appears to target the Hispanic community and is known to be an issue in several other cities across the United States. During this crisis, the City of Cambridge, the Red Cross, the Central Square Business Association, the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and our many community partners have joined forces to help the YWCA. The YWCA has an immediate need for monetary support to make immediate building repairs and to provide the critical support services our residents need. Damages from the flooding are estimated to exceed $100,000, which we anticipate will be covered by insurance. However, insurance will not cover the immediate cost of additional staffing that the YWCA has needed to support our residents who have been living in temporary locations all over Cambridge and Boston. Additionally, the YWCA leases space to two other community nonprofit organizations, as well as dance, martial arts, and Pilates studios, which have all been temporarily displaced from their work spaces due to the damage. We also expect to incur addition costs related to putting preventative measures into place to help ensure that this type of disaster does not reoccur. The YWCA staff has been working around the clock to ensure that all of the 103 women who call the Tanner Residence home have been safely housed and cared for until the building has become habitable. Getting everyone home again and providing the necessary services is our ongoing challenge.
