For one last time: Dear Neighbors! At the Monday 15 December City Council meeting, the City Council voted to confer landmark designation on 33 Richdale, the former Hathaway Bakery. Exterior changes to the Hathaway Bakery building will require review and approval by the Cambridge Historical Commission in perpetuity. (This link will tell you more about the significance of landmark designation in Cambridge. http://www2.cambridgema.gov/Historic/landmarks.html ) Again FYI, granting landmark status does not affect the previous approval by the CHC of the final scheme which Rob and Sam Wolff proposed. Uber has been cooperative and has provided assistance with this ongoing investigation.Alejandro Done, 46, of Boston, was arraigned on charges of rape, assault to rape, kidnapping, and assault and battery (two counts).Cambridge District Court Judge Roanne Sragow ordered the defendant held pending a Dangerousness Hearing, pursuant to MGL c. 276 s. 58A, scheduled for Wednesday, December 24 at 9:00am.³We allege that this defendant picked up a young woman, presenting himself as the driver for a ride-sharing service, and then drove her to a secluded location where he beat and sexually assaulted her,² said District Attorney Ryan. ³This alleged predator took advantage of a young woman who trusted that he was who he portrayed himself to be and exploited her vulnerability once he had her in his car.²³Every day people are engaging car services for their transportation needs, and placing their trust in them for their personal safety and security,² District Attorney Ryan said. ³While these services are a convenience, and often a necessity of modern urban living, we urge everyone to take precautions to ensure they are as safe as possible. Confirm that the car you are getting into is the particular one you have ordered. Be cautious if the driver is asking you to do something that you understand to be against company policy, as when they request you pay by cash when you understand that the company receives payment by credit card. The woman had been out with friends and decided to use a car service to get home. Once she got inside the car, she told the driver her destination and he instructed her that he would need cash payment. The defendant stopped while the woman went to an ATM to get cash and then returned to the car. The defendant then drove to a location that the passenger was not familiar with, pulled over in a secluded area and jumped in the backseat where she was sitting. He allegedly struck her with his hands, strangled her, locked the car doors so that she could not escape and covered her mouth so she could not scream. During an ensuing physical struggle, the defendant allegedly sexually assaulted the woman. Cambridge Police began an immediate investigation into this matter and during the investigation allegedly identified the defendant as the driver of the car through the ride-sharing service company records. The woman subsequently allegedly identified the defendant as the person who assaulted her.These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney Kate Kleimola. Neighbors - This Monday evening, 15 December, the Cambridge Historical Commission’s recommendation to designate 33 Richdale (aka Hathaway Bakery) as a Landmark is on the agenda for the City Council hearing! (City Manager item #12.) Please plan to attend and voice your support -- however briefly -- at this meeting. This is an important meeting as the City Council could bring this to a vote Monday evening. Note that the hearing starts at 5:30PM and will be held at 459 Broadway (Rindge & Latin High School), in the Henrietta S. Attles Meeting Room. 33 Richdale - Hathaway Bakery

Neighbors, Thursday evening, the Cambridge Historical Commission voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council designate 33 Richdale (aka Hathaway Bakery) as a Landmark! If the City Council votes to confer landmark designation, exterior changes to the Hathaway Bakery building would require review and approval by the Cambridge Historical Commission in perpetuity. (This link will tell you more about the significance of landmark designation in Cambridge. http://www2.cambridgema.gov/Historic/landmarks.html ) Just FYI, granting landmark status does not affect the previous approval by the CHC of the final scheme which Rob and Sam Wolff proposed. Thanks to everyone who spoke at the CHC hearing last night, and thanks to everyone who supported landmark designation with their presence at the hearing. (The CHC chair, Bill King, did in fact ask for a show of hands of those attending for the 33 Richdale case.) Thanks, too, to our neighbor, Representative Marjorie Decker, who forwarded to the CHC a lovely statement (attached) about the significance of the Hathaway Bakery to the cultural history of Cambridge. What a wonderful, long slog it has been, but we’re not quite there. Never fear, I will let you know when the Hathaway Bakery landmark designation is scheduled on the City Council agenda.
