I recently had a project done in my home and was very pleased with the builder, David Hartjes. I have undertaken many renovation projects and built a few houses in my career, so I have had lots of experience with builders and feel that I can wholeheartedly endorse Dave. Dave is a good planner, is very organized, and he is familiar with the procedures of the Cambridge Building Department. He is excellent at working with existing conditions and minimizes the impact of the work on the dwellers. In our case, we turned a loft that had been used as storage into a home office with a large skylight and a built-in desk. We built a new cabinetry closet in the master bedroom. We rerouted a dryer vent. And we refashioned a kitchen cabinet in order to put a microwave over the stove. Dave works with a cabinet maker who cut down the size of the kitchen cabinet doors so they would fit a smaller opening. One cannot tell they had ever been altered. A bunch of you have contacted me about Google and other high speed internet options, and more have complained about ugly overhead wires, so I figured it was worth putting my thoughts together in one piece and passing them out to my general list. I won¹t say my notes are perfectly accurate, but I will argue that they are well worth reading. I¹d follow the links, too, especially the NYT one about Chattanooga¹s fiber optic system. If we are not careful, we¹ll wake up someday and find out that we¹ve become a digital backwater due to slow internet access. But none of this stuff is simple. I can¹t claim to understand it all, or even much of it, but I do know that we need to be careful that we don¹t read articles about what other people are doing and think it¹s going to be easy to do it here. We should always ask what can be done and we should push for changes in law, where appropriate, to help us stay competitive, but we have a lot of other players in the utility game than just the consumer and the providers (or in the case of folks with solar who sell back to the grid, prosumers¹). What we can¹t do, though, is rest on our laurels while Chattanooga starts pulling businesses from us. We have super high real estate costs that make it challenging to locate here, we can¹t compound that problem with slow internet access.
