Over 2,700 Cambridge residents age 12 and older voted online and at events around town to decide which projects the City should fund. Last night, we announced the winners at a Results Party at the Citywide Senior Center. The following six projects won PB funding for FY16: · 100 new trees and tree wells in low-canopy neighborhoods ($119,400) · 20 new laptops for the Community Learning Center ($27,000) · Bilingual books for children learning English ($7,000) · Public toilet in Central Square ($320,000) · 8 bike repair stations ($12,000) · Free public Wi-Fi in 6 outdoor locations ($42,000) For a complete breakdown of voting results, please visit www.cambridgema.gov/yourbudget <http://www.cambridgema.gov/yourbudget> . We¹re planning to launch a second round of Participatory Budgeting this summer. Although I understand the frustration that many are feeling with the planning board process, I have hesitation, however, to place these decisions so firmly in the political arena. Every decision that would come before the Council would turn into a divisive conversation and decisions would be prone to what is most politically beneficial not what is most beneficial for the city as a whole. On the surface this petition makes some sense but the unintended consequences would be substantial. I have significant reservations that this would lead to the outcome folks want. There are other ideas that can improve this process, such as allowing the Council to approve appointments to the planning board, which would make the Council much more accountable for who is serving. Also, currently, a developer is required to have his/her development planned in its entirety before coming to the planning board. These plans cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars leaving developers reluctant to change their plans after hearing community input. We need a process that involves the community much sooner. We can change the process to require developers to meet with the community prior to filing anything with the planning board which will lead to much greater community input. Thank you again for your input. I have been impressed and encouraged by the level of community input and am looking forward to the ongoing Master Plan process. Apartment needed

Our current tenants on the third floor - Ali and Ida - are moving out on account of the fact that we need more space for our family. They are looking for a small apartment beginning sometime this summer, preferably in the Porter Square neighborhood. They are a delightful couple from Canada, both on post-docs - Ali at MIT and Ida at Brandeis. They have no kids or pets. We have become good friends and are very sorry to see them go. A number of you have expressed some concern that it had seemed to stall out. You might have noticed that it¹s started up again, having been shut down due, according to the attached notice, severe winter conditions. You can learn more about the project, which includes Flagstaff Park, a multi-use path and associated roadwork, on the City¹s webpage here <http://www.cambridgema.gov/CDD/Projects/Transportation/cambridgecommon.aspx > . The project is going to take down about 21 trees this coming week and it¹s going to look somewhat denuded after that. I don¹t particularly like that part of the plan, but they did go through a fairly involved discussion about that part of the project so, while I may wish they¹d kept more trees, I can¹t claim to be surprised. There will be more trees planed later on, along with other major landscaping changes involving bushes and fences and so forth. Ini Tomeu, Public Information Officer Note From Bill Deignan, Transportation Planner, Community Development: Attached is a general notice from MassDOT about the spring commencement of construction in the Common itself after the substantial completion of work on Mass. Avenue and construction of the multi-use path in Flagstaff Park during the last year. One specific, upcoming work item that I wanted to make you aware of was the removal of approximately 21 trees in the Common next week on April 7th and 8th. As you know, these trees were identified and permitted to be removed during the design process because many of them are Norway Maples in decline and others are being removed to re-open views of the Civil War monument. The removals were reviewed by the Committee on Public Planting, were discussed during the public process and at a walk in the Common with concerned members of the public and City Council. Over 100 new trees will be planted in the Common as part of the project.
