There have been numerous rat sightings in the immediate area. Please let us all know if you see rats and where. I've seen rats twice in the past few months coming out the trash/dumpster area behind the Breugger's/nail salon onto the sidewalk, both times in the 6-8pm window - they don't seem to mind that there's foot traffic walking by. 20 years living in Porter and I don't think I had ever seen one before this summer.

Business ICYMI: Somerville Medical Marijuana Shop Opens Sage Naturals opened Friday in Davis Square. By Alex Newman (Patch Staff) - Updated Oct 28, 2017 8:38 pm ET SOMERVILLE, MA – Somerville's first registered medical marijuana dispensary held its grand opening Friday morning. Sage Naturals is located at 240 Elm St., a 5,000-square-foot retail space underneath bfresh market in Davis Square. This is the non-profit's second area dispensary, behind a location on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge. "Our goal at Sage Naturals is to help people feel better by producing the best possible natural medical cannabis for the patients of Somerville and surrounding communities," Michael Dundas, CEO of Sage Naturals, said in a statement. "Voters of Somerville overwhelmingly supported medical marijuana in the 2012 statewide ballot initiative and we are pleased to finally fulfill this unmet need." Dundas was appointed to the state's Cannabis Advisory Board in July. The 25-member group reports to the Cannabis Control Commission, Massachusetts' regulatory body on medical marijuana. Sage Naturals is open seven days a week from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and offers naturally cultivated cannabis flowers, oils, extracts and edibles for patients with a valid Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana card. Its products are sold in air-tight, child-resistant packaging and are supplied by Sage Naturals' production facility, which grows over 60 strains of marijuana. Some strains produced by Sage Naturals substitute THC for various levels and ratios of CBD, which maintains the medical benefits of marijuana without the psychoactive properties associated with THC, according to a company press release. The company also creates its own line of edibles. To celebrate its opening, Sage Naturals donated $1,500 each to the Somerville Homeless Coalition and the Community Action Agency of Somerville. Denise Simmons and the City of Cambridge have established a relief effort through the Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund. Financial donations to this fund will support the recovery process for residents from four municipalities in Puerto Rico: Coamo, Jayuya, Orocovis, and Salinas. Cambridge has a long history of Puerto Ricans from these communities making Cambridge their home. Coamo, Jayuya, Orocovis, and Salinas are small rural communities located in the southern part of the island, an area identified as one of the hardest to reach regions. On Oct. 21-22, the city held a drive for desperately needed relief supplies, which brought in approximately 15,000 pounds of donated goods. Hundreds of local donors dropped off items at the Cambridge Water Department on Saturday and the Police Department on Sunday, while over 100 volunteers accepted and sorted the goods. “I am incredibly proud of how the Cambridge community has once again stepped up to help out those in need,” said Mayor E. Denise Simmons, who has helped lead the city’s efforts. “There are many, many Cantabrigians with strong personal ties to Puerto Rico, and we are all working together to find ways to help our brothers and sisters get relief and start to rebuild.” Donations can be made online, in person at Cambridge City Hall (795 Massachusetts Avenue), or by mail. There at least three open seats but all 9 seats are up for reelection. I have invited Marc McGovern, Allan Mallon, Sumbul Sidiqu, and Sean Tierney to come and meet some of our friends and neighbors. I hope this will be an opportunity for you to get to know some of the candidates and ask question. Having served for 14 years as a city councilor I truly value the experience and skills it takes to be effective. I think there are a lot of great folks running for Council and am energized by the commitment people have to get involved. Now more than ever we need people who are willing to run and many more who are willing to pay attention stay, engaged and vote. I have a particular relationship to each of the four candidates. I believe they each bring important experiences and strengths to the role of city councilor. Please excuse the brief introduction-happy to talk more about any of the candidates on Sunday or at a later time. Marc and I have know each other since our days as high school activists when we were both elected to serve on the CRLS student school committee. His experience as a social worker, who continues to work with high risk youth, is an incredible asset to his work. His unrelentless commitment to challenging the roots of poverty serves many under represented families in our community. He is thoughtful an active listener who patiently tries to build consensus but is not afraid to take transparent principled positions. He is the father of four from 4th grade twins to a CRLS grad and another currently attending CRLS. I believe his experience as a former school committee and incumbent will serve this newer council and our community well. Allan Mallon left her job in the private sector to dedicate herself full time, in what was her volunteer initiative to provide solutions to hunger insecurity. She founded the weekend backpack program and served as an education Liason in the Mayors office. She is the mom of two attending Cambridge public schools. Alanna, is a problem solver go getter and community knitter. She sees a need or an opportunity to serve or be helpful and she does it without being asked recognized or thanked. I had hoped when I left the council that she would consider running someday--and am really grateful that she is a candidate. It's an extension of what she spends much of her time doing. Sumbul Siddiqui is a young woman I have known for over 15 years since she was an outspoken CRLS activist. I have been waiting for the day she would run for office. Sumbul's family moved from Pakistan to Cambridge when she was only 2. She now uses her law degree as a legal services attorney to help others navigate affordable housing health care and education. I think we are lucky that she is able to stay in Cambridge and now run for office. Sean Tierney grew up in Cambridge but I only met Sean a couple of years ago in his role as legal council and policy director to the MA House of Representative's Housing Committee. In fact, I forgot Sean was from Cambridge (shocking I know) and came to value and rely on him in his professional role. I served for four years on the Housing Committee and am still often tapped by the House Chair and the Speaker to speak on Housing policy. Sean's commitment to affordable housing and his indepth knowledge of housing policy has been invaluable to me in my legislative work. In challenging moments when I was navigating some of the hurdles to housing policy I supported or opposed it was always helpful to know Sean was quietly cheering me on and clearly shared my values. His experience will serve our community well on the city council. Please rsvp if you can me by Friday.
