Nothing is getting dumped into the ocean. Cambridge’s food scraps are taken to a facility in Charlestown, called CORe, where they are mixed with water in a giant blender and then trucked up to an anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in Lawrence. That AD facility digests sewage sludge along with the food scraps to make energy; the food boosts the energy value of the sludge. The material left over at the end, the digestate, is dried into pellets and put on land as fertilizer, reducing the need for fertilizers made from fossil fuels. AD is a great form of renewable energy. However, food is a high value material and, in my professional opinion and that of my peers in this field, it is not the highest and best use of our food scraps to mix them with something as toxic as sludge. Sludge contains road runoff and the chemicals that pass through our bodies into the waste water, including pharmaceuticals, along with other toxins that people put down the drain. These can survive the digestion process and end up being applied to the land in the form of the pellets. An expert on sludge toxicity will be at the hearing to talk about that. Many of us would prefer to see the food scraps composted. However, the infrastructure for composting food scraps is limited. But the City should do what it can to identify or create capacity. It is important that we let Cambridge know we want them to do this. I heard a presentation by the company that runs CORe and he said they Cambridge’s food scraps are remarkably clean; unlike our recyclables, there is not a lot of contamination.
