But wait! Instead, a team of Glass Lab instructors has worked hard to create an Online MIT Great Glass Pumpkin Patch for your shopping enjoyment (and our survival). Between early last October and this March when MIT students were all sent home and the lab shut down, the staff and students made about 450 glass pumpkins, or roughly 25% of our usual yearly inventory. All of these pumpkins will be in an online gallery at mitglasslab.org and available for purchase, starting Saturday, October 24th at 12:00 noon, and until Monday, October 26th at 8:00PM. This link is not live yet, but will be sometime in the next week so that customers may familiarize themselves with the site. However the pumpkins will not appear until noon on October 24th, at which point all the pumpkins will appear and the sale will commence. Question: If you have only 450 pumpkins, why don’t you just keep them and sell them next year? Answer: Because the MIT Glass Lab depends almost entirely upon the revenue generated by the Great Glass Pumpkin Patch to stay operational. If we stop selling pumpkins, we’ll have to stop the program. How this will work: All pumpkins will have a listed sale price as they do at the regular sale on Kresge Oval. This is not an auction. All of the pumpkins are one-of-a-kind, so there is only one of each item. The size of each pumpkin can be approximated by comparison with a ruler that appears in each photograph next to each pumpkin. All of the pumpkins will be released for sale at the same time, at the start of the sale. All sales are first-come-first-served; pumpkins will become unavailable when a payment transaction for that pumpkin has been completed. Shipping: All pumpkins will be shipped via FedEx Ground from MIT. The cost of shipping will be added to the sale price of the pumpkin(s) you buy. Due to the complexity and expense of overseas shipping, we regret that we must limit shipping to the Continental United States. Return policy: Consistent with our live sale policy, there are no returns on pumpkins except in the case of a serious structural defect such as a crack or very sharp surface. Yes. - Most of the canopy is in west Cambridge (which is clear just by looking at a Google earth map and walking around) (this is also the area targeted for increased density based on the recent housing overlay that was passed). Yes! - Most of the loss is due to trees cut on private property (yes? numbers were shared) My guess is that most of the tree loss is in Condo conversions and similar “upgrading” of properties – as well as developers (commercial and housing). - A very significant part of the tree canopy is on private property (70-80% verify this) Probably - In 10 years about 150 ha were lost (another way to look at the 20% of canopy loss) - To make up for the loss we need to plant 2,700 trees /year (which appears to be unrealistic given the rate of on-going loss as well, lack of resources to plant, prune and maintain trees). I have been in a hearing pre-Covid where new crabapple trees well established in East Cambridge were removed to be replaced by "newer" trees because they were in the way.... No way we can do that, and there is a HUGE loss of newly planted trees (60-70% loss plus all the decades to get to maturity). And the cost! - Funds in Tree Trust are ONLY for trees on public property. Suggestion was made to earmark funds to help plant on private property. Yes Good point - but you can ask for one on your street front. - the presentation included creating the category of "exceptional tree" which I thought was great (over 30" in diameter). These trees would be handled with specific rules to recognize their unique value. I believe they represent 3% of the canopy (and again more often than not on private property and most likely - yes? - attached to single family homes that have the land to host them). 30 is massive – why not 20? - There are 6 categories of situations when one applies to cut a tree (dead or dangerous (73%), emergency e.g after storm, utility work necessity, city park, ...). - Mitigation is a big issue when it comes down to authorizing to cut a healthy tree - you can buy the right to cut a tree (which I find very troubling) ????? (just say no). We don’t allow people to buy the right not to include affordable housing. - various "make up" strategies were presenting, the current ones don't seem to differentiate very well the real value of a true (i.e. one mature tree is worth a lot more than 6 or 8 trees if you go by diameter). Exactly. - it does not take into account tree size (mature trees in particular). Key point - would like to educate and encourage property owners (developers?) in planting trees rather than just paying into the tree fund. Also in the importance of maintaining trees. - you are not obligated to replant a dead tree (which seems odd to me). Interesting and important, because in my experience, trees are often taken down to put a building there instead, although some trees are too close to the foundations so one would not want to replace them so close. - Budget is needed to hire a crew (or expand it?) to not only plant but also prune and maintain trees, monitor what happens after a tree is cut (i.e. that the owner or developer actually does what they committed to). Prune and maintain trees is key on private and public lands. Suggestions made during the hearing - Attach tree rules to regular building permits (not sure if I got that right, seems like it would be for any building permit). Good - Dennis Carlone asked why pick 30" for exceptional trees, 24" would still be very large. Seems like a standard. This is somewhat like landmarking certain trees which I like - Low income owners are exempt from paying but 1) it was suggested that if the property is sold for a significant amount then the fee could be paid once the transaction is complete, 2) the city could step up to help. OK – but then the owner would already be in a better financial position. - Same if cutting a tree is part of an Affordable Housing project. They should NOT be cutting mature trees for AHO or any other development. I thought this was a no go o - One member of the public spoke (Chris Schmidt) asked 1) to be proactive in maintenance protecting trees before utility companies cut them to the point where the tree has reduced changes of survival, 2) incentivize private owners. OK - Patty Nolan suggested efforts to "extend" the life of existing trees - NYC pledge to plant 1M trees. NYC is MUCH bigger, but good to extend life. It cost $850 per inch to "buy the right to cut" a tree: $6,800 for an 8" tree. If you own a multi-million dollar home I would guess that this might not be sufficiently dissuasive. At least it does happen. Interesting! ---- The idea of creating a category for "exceptional" trees with special protection recognizes the special value of those trees to the ecosystem and to prevent heat pockets very effectively. Consider writing to the Council in support of that. Yes. Affordable Housing and trees: my understanding is that, as it was voted, the AHO leaves it at the discretion of the developer to take down trees of any size and they could be large mature trees 30" or more. This tree ordinance would have to include protection for trees on land purchased for affordable housing development. Yes. It needs to include affordable housing. Lower income residents also need trees. Realistically, if a backyard is eliminated to increase density, chances are it won't be possible to replant trees that were cut. My guess is that it's what happened in East Cambridge over the years. Yes that is a huge problem with this push to add even more density to an already OVER DENSE city. More meetings will take place on this topic due to reach a conclusion on the exact language in December when the current ordinance expires. City-sponsored events include annual Halloween open houses hosted by the Cambridge Fire Department and Halloween activities sponsored by the Department of Human Service Program’s Community Schools. “Community celebrations are an important part of civic life in Cambridge; however, we must continue to adhere to COVID-19 safety measures. Traditional door to door trick-or-treating is a higher risk activity and I strongly encourage residents to consider safer alternatives,” said Cambridge City Manager Louis A. DePasquale. “We have a collective obligation this Halloween – and every day – to engage in behaviors that help Cambridge remain a lower risk community. “Our decision to cancel the City’s annual Halloween events this year was not made lightly. We know this year has been hard on our residents, particularly families with younger children, and this is just one more sacrifice we are asking our families to make for the greater well-being, safety and health of our City,” says Mayor Siddiqui. “I encourage residents and families to celebrate Halloween through the variety of lower risk activities listed in the CDC guidelines.” The City of Cambridge urges residents planning to celebrate Halloween to follow the guidance from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and to engage in only lower or moderate risk activities to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19. Halloween activities are subject to the current state gathering size limits as well as applicable any sector-specific workplace safety standards. "We are asking residents to have a safe and fun Halloween this year and avoid higher risk activities," said Claude A. Jacob, Chief Public Health Officer and director of the Cambridge Public Health Department. "Because the risk of COVID-19 transmission is greatest in indoors, we especially want to caution residents to avoid crowded indoor parties and haunted houses.” Residents should stay home and refrain from Halloween activities, including handing out Halloween treats, if they feel unwell, have tested positive for COVID-19, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or have traveled to or from a state that is not classified as lower risk within the last 14 days. According to the CDC, many traditional Halloween activities can be higher risk for spreading viruses. The CDC categorizes Halloween activities into higher, moderate, and lower risk activities. It is recommended to avoid higher-risk activities and consider engaging in only lower to moderate risk alternatives this year. Higher risk activities include: Participating in traditional trick-or-treating where treats are handed to children who go door to door Having trunk-or-treat where treats are handed out from trunks of cars lined up in large parking lots Attending crowded costume parties held indoors Going to an indoor haunted house where people may be crowded together and screaming Going on hayrides or tractor rides with people who are not in your household Moderate risk activities include: Participating in one-way trick-or-treating where individually wrapped goodie bags are lined up for families to grab and go. Tips: If you are preparing goodie bags, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after preparing the bags. Leave the goodie bags at the end of your driveway or edge of your yard and consider leaving hand sanitizer next to the treats for children to use. Families should discourage children from eating candy while trick-or-treating. Once home, have children wash their hands. If you are concerned about coronavirus transmission from candy wrappers, consider "quarantining" Halloween candy for three days. Throw away any candy that is not individually wrapped. This year, we have witnessed the importance of protest by exposing racism and human rights violations through the Black Lives Matter movement. Since the 2016 presidential election, we've seen the number of protests grow exponentially against police brutality, systemic racism, climate change, limited access to healthcare, gun ownership and corruption within our political system to name a few, as well as, growth in important movements such as women's rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and the right to vote. In all instances, protest posters hae played a key role in spreading awareness to create positive change. This fall, the offices of Exhibitions and Community Engagement at Lesley Art + Design invite art and design students, faculty and staff to submit original protest posters for a pop-up exhibition to be installed in the street-facing windows of the Roberts Gallery. Halloween Question

Hi all,I am wondering if anyone has put any thought into Halloween this year. My 7-yr-old has a costume and I hate to tell her that we can't go trick-or-treating. Are there enough people in the neighborhood who would be willing to put out candy in bags and do it on the early side so that we can all see each other? Any other thoughts? I thought I would reach out to the neighborhood to see if there are any creative ideas for handling Halloween. If it's just a no-go, I understand as well, but thought I would reach out...Thanks,Alison Moore

You are receiving this email since you have expressed interest in the MBTA’s Porter Square Retaining Wall Repairs Project. Work began in September of 2020 and will continue until the Summer of 2021. The station will remain open during construction. Please see the attached flyer which summarizes the construction activities. Our Contractor is continuing with their pre-construction survey work this week and anticipate the sheet pile driving portion of this work to start next week, the week of October 19th, and continue for approximately 2 weeks. Neighbors can expect increased noise and periods of vibration from heavy equipment and machinery during the sheet pile driving installation work. This work will occur during the daytime hours, primarily Monday-Friday between 7am-4pm. The flu vaccine is being donated by Cambridge Health Alliance. “Getting a seasonal flu shot has never been more critical because we want residents to stay healthy this winter and we don’t want to overwhelm our hospitals with sick patients,” said Claude A. Jacob, Chief Public Health Officer and director of the Cambridge Public Health Department. “For the flu clinics, our top priority is to ensure easy access to the vaccine, short wait times, and a safe environment.” The health department’s flu vaccine campaign kicked off earlier this month with outreach to several groups at high risk for serious complications from the flu. A special flu clinic was held at four senior housing complexes on Oct. 7–8. The department is also providing free flu shots to the homeless community, with six clinics scheduled at shelters and meals sites through mid-October. Starting on Thursday, Oct. 15, people who live or work in Cambridge can get a free flu shot at the health department’s public clinics. The first four clinics will be held indoors on Oct. 15, Oct. 21 (two clinics), and Oct. 22 at the King Open School, 850 Cambridge Street in the Wellington-Harrington neighborhood. Outdoor clinics will be held on Oct. 28–29 at Starlight Square (the parking lot at the corner of Norfolk St. and Bishop Allen Dr. in Central Square) and at Danehy Park/Fresh Pond Plaza on Nov. 14. - Flu shot appointments are required this year. To schedule an appointment online, go to https://cphd-flu-2020.as.me. The City’s Flu Clinic Call Center at 617-349-9788 will open next week for those who wish to make appointments by phone. - Children age 6 months and older can receive a flu shot at all flu clinics. - Nasal spray flu vaccine (FluMist®) will be available for people age 2–50, while supplies last. - High-dose flu vaccine will be available for adults age 65 and older, while supplies last. - While there is no charge to the public for flu shots, people with health insurance are encouraged to bring their cards with them to the clinics. - The Cambridge Public Health Department will not be able to offer flu shots at its office this year, due to the pandemic. Residents are encouraged to go to one of the public flu clinics, a local pharmacy, or make an appointment with their health care provider. *Safety Precautions* During the pandemic, the health department is implementing strict safety procedures at the flu clinics to reduce the risk of getting—or transmitting—COVID-19. If you are seeking a flu shot, you will be asked to follow new guidelines and recommendations to support these safety and health measures. The King Open School is newly renovated and has a state-of-the-art air circulation system. In adherence with state guidelines, the number of people allowed into the building at the same time will be limited.
