Created in late October with a founding $500,000 gift from the Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund and a $100,000 investment from the Wagner Foundation, the fund was established to address urgent needs in the sector due to COVID-19 and to protect the city’s cultural richness over the long term. When the pandemic hit, arts and culture organizations were forced to close theaters and venues overnight, leading to lay-offs and furloughs, pivots to virtual programming, and a devastating ripple effect on the economy as patrons stopped dining and shopping nearby. “The collapse of the creative economy has hit us hard and affected a lot of people and it’s not about losing our performance space, it’s about not being able to pay our bills,” said Josh Garneau, managing director of ImprovBoston. The organization received $10,000 grant to retain staff and pivot its curriculum to the online format. ImprovBoston closed its Central Square theatre last month. Before COVID-19, 150 people were supported by ImprovBoston in some way and 2,000 people came into Central Square each week for classes, and drank, dined, and shopped while there. The organization has been awarded an additional $25,000 grant from the Foundation and is hibernating this winter with the hope of emerging this spring with additional funding. Another long-standing cultural anchor to receive a $10,000 grant is the José Mateo Ballet Theatre, which lost $1.5 million in revenue this year and reduced its full-time staff and contractors from 47 to seven. “That Cambridge is opening its purse now is such an affirmation that the sector is seen as vital, in that series of things that we need to be full and whole human beings,” said Scott Fraser, executive director. “Artists are resilient, and the sector will come back, but stronger and different, and I think equity will be a defining feature.” A third grantee, The Hip Hop Transformation, will use their $10,000 grant to pay staff to continue their creative after-school program online. “Even before the pandemic, our students would use this platform to work through tough stuff like remembering when their family got evicted or grappling with the death of a friend. Right now, our kids are going through so much, and they need this project more than ever,” said Darrin Korte, executive director of the Cambridge Community Center, which runs the hip hop program. While most of the grants are for up to $10,000 to aid with operations and programming, one organization, The Dance Complex, was awarded a $25,000 grant to support capital improvements needed to make their historic Central Square building more operational in the COVID-19 environment. “Cambridge’s artists and our arts and culture organizations are a significant part of the connective fabric of our city and act as a powerful and uplifting equalizer in our community,” said Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui. “Regardless of differences in language, religion, culture, gender expression or age — the arts bring us together, and we need to support and care for them.” “We are proud to partner with the Cambridge Community Foundation in supporting our vibrant arts and culture sector,” said City Manager Louis DePasquale. “Collectively, we are committed to ensuring the survival of the arts in Cambridge because this sector is critical to the cultural vibrancy of our community. The Cultural Capital Fund is a critical tool to help provide financial relief to arts organizations.” The new Cultural Capital Fund, is Cambridge’s first, central channel for donors and other stakeholders to pool their resources into a common purpose: provide immediate support to arts organizations at risk due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to protect the viability of the arts ecosystem for years to come. The Foundation will award additional grants in the New Year. The Foundation is also seeking to connect arts and culture organizations to nonmonetary resources as well. “Maintaining the arts ecosystem – large and small organizations, creative ventures, and the livelihood of artists and cultural workers is critical to retaining our city’s innovation capacity. And we at Cambridge Arts have been honored to continue finding ways to be creative with you and to continue to serve you as we've all navigated the deadly coronavirus. The photos below from 2020 show our community's resilience and beauty as we've adapted together. It really comes to life. Public art is so important. It adds to the quality of urban life," Neil Rohr said when he saw Randal Thurston's new artwork being installed across the street from his home on Jan. 2. The project, funded by the City of Cambridge's Percent-For-Art program, was put up at the Goldstar Mothers Pool at the new King Open / Cambridge Street Upper Schools and Community Complex. Guitarist Pablo Mendoza became the first person to receive a 2020 Street Performer Permit when he visited the Cambridge Arts office on Jan. 2. In 2019, 396 artists received free permits. In keeping with state and local guidelines and policies, the 2020 program has been suspended since March to protect the health and safety of our performers and audiences. Photographer Karl Baden (left) visited with Officer Michael “Whitey” Daniliuk, who was featured in one of the Cambridge artist's photos in his exhibition "Mass Ave, Cambridge" at Cambridge Arts' Gallery 344 in January and February. The cast of J. Sylvan’s queer Bible musical “Beloved King” performed a dress rehearsal at Oberon in Cambridge on March 12. The musical, which was supported by a Cambridge Arts grant, was scheduled to debut with two sold-out performances that night, but sadly had to be canceled as Coronavirus shutdowns began. After "TRA•VERSE," a five-year retrospective of the City's Sidewalk Poetry program, had to close at Gallery 344 to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we began featuring poems from the program on social media, eventually sharing more than a hundred. (Carl Tremblay photo, design by Rick Rawlins and students at Lesley Art & Design) Ngoc-Tran Vu provided guidance on artist workshops during virtual Cambridge Arts Office Hours in April, one of the adaptations Cambridge Arts made to continue to serve the community as coronavirus safety measures shifted activities online. Cambridge Arts' annual River Festival transformed into the virtual Stream Festival, featuring eight hours of dance, theater, music, poetry, crafts, People's Sculpture Racing and a Mermaid Promenade live-streamed on Cambridge Community Television and social media on June 6. Black Lives Matter paintings filled Graffiti Alley, including this one at the entrance off Lot 5 in Central Square, as anti-racism protests took place locally and across the nation in June. Beginning in July, Cambridge Arts staff have been meeting every other week to address how our programs can be more anti-racist and better address diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion. Artist Elisa Hamilton (top left) led a virtual dialogue in July about "Jukebox: A New Community Storysharing Project," a public artwork she's been commissioned by the City to create for the 130-year-old Foundry building at 101 Rogers St., which is being repurposed by the City of Cambridge and Cambridge Redevelopment Authority into a public community space for art, entrepreneurship, technology and workforce education. She was joined by her collaborators Moses Michel and Chris Hope of The Loop Lab (left middle and bottom), Cambridge Arts Director of Public Art Lillian Hsu (top right), and Stephanie Couch, President Of the Foundry Consortium (bottom right). “This mural celebrates the joys of going to your local park with scenes such as bike riding, dog walking, and gardening," Cambridge artist Monique Aimee said of the artwork she painted across the City’s new brine tanks at St. Peter’s Field, next to Danehy Park, in July. "The purpose of these brine tanks is to have a better environmental impact, so I wanted to make sure the theme of nature and growth is present from any angle. PLEASE EMAIL THE GOVERNOR AND REQUEST THAT HE SIGN THE POLICE REFORM BILL, just returned to him by the legislature! The bill is not revolutionary, it is a compromise bill, not nearly all we need to do, but it is a start. It should not be watered down further. Ruth Last week, instead of listening to the broad and diverse coalition calling on him to sign meaningful law enforcement reform into law, Governor Baker buckled to the pressure of police unions and sent the bill back to the Legislature with amendments. The changes cut at one of the central goals of the bill: to not just hold officers accountable for misconduct, but to reduce and prevent that very misconduct from happening in the first place. Under the Governor’s amendments, key powers to establish training curricula, set certification standards, and—most importantly—make rules about police use of force would be taken away from the civilian-led POST board (“Police Officer Standards & Training”) and returned to an all-law enforcement commission. Critical decisions will likely be made this weekend on the final police reform bill. We’re down to the wire, and the Governor needs to hear from you. Right now they re very happy to have new, unwrapped toys for Christmas gifts. After Christmas we will get back to the question of used toys. They' re very happy to have gift cards. Besides the Friday delivery happening this week my husband and I are going to Chelsea to take the books on Tuesday morning, leaving cohousing at 10AM. We are happy to take new toys and gift cards at that time. People could get them to me by 9:30 AM on Tuesday or maybe they could get them to you and I would come pick up on my way Tuesday morning? What do you think. I will be home on Monday to accept delivery as well. thanks so much! The Chelsea organization we partner with is very grateful for these books that benefit the children, and also adults who are learning English and/or learning to read to and with their children. They will distribute during the holiday seasons coming up. DROP OFF TIME: Friday, Dec 18, from 9am to 3:00pm WHERE: 175 Richdale Ave entrance to CoHousing.
