Your generous donations, encouraging emails, and positive messages have touched all of us, and helped everyone power through the initial phases of this unpredictable and ever-changing public health crisis. With your help, we have been able to keep our kitchen running so that our critically and chronically ill clients could remain well fed during this unprecedented time of need. Now more than ever, every busy day of preparing and sending nourishing meals to them is another opportunity to show how much we care. Yesterday, we received a heartwarming message of gratitude from a client who received our special pantry box delivery last week. She told our Client Services team “my pantry is more stocked up than it’s been in a long time. I now feel safe and prepared. Thank you for what you do!” Thank you for helping us deliver such comfort during these turbulent times. I am also very happy to share that last week, Massachusetts designated Community Servings an “essential business.” This means we can keep preparing and delivering the nutritious, scratch-made food our clients need to maintain and improve their health throughout the pandemic. With help from the City of Boston, we are preparing even more of our delicious meals to feed additional neighbors in need during the crisis. We are even looking into ways to temporarily hire out-of-work restaurant workers as a way to expand our production capabilities, while supporting others in the community. Other important updates that I would like to share with you include: · Workers, visitors and volunteers who enter our Food Campus in Jamaica Plain must adhere to strict health and safety guidelines. This includes sanitizing and washing their hands upon entry, and wearing a mask, protective gloves, apron, and hat or hair net in our kitchen. In order to be on the premises, a person may NOT have: · Traveled outside the U.S. within the last two weeks· Been in contact with someone in the last two weeks who has or may have contracted COVID-19· Experienced cold or flu-like symptoms, including a cough, chest congestion, fever, or shortness of breath, in the last 72-hours · This week, we are ramping up production and delivery of our medically tailored meals. Over the last two weeks, we’ve prepared and shipped over 2,000 pantry boxes filled with non-perishable and shelf-stable food items for clients to keep on hand in case of a disruption to our supply or delivery systems. · We have devised and implemented a plan to keep our kitchen operational while safely maintaining at least six feet or more of distance between our workers. We are utilizing all available spaces to prep, cook, and package food, including our newly opened ADA-certified kitchen and Learning Kitchen. As of last week, anyone working in the kitchen is required to wear a face mask. This is in addition to the usual health and safety measures we require, which includes frequent handwashing and sanitizing, wearing a hairnet or hat, and repeatedly changing protective gloves. As an extra precaution, everyone is also required to take their temperature as they arrive to work. · As part of our response to the coronavirus pandemic, we have temporarily modified our volunteer calendar. We are now offering two shifts per day Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. We are requiring that all volunteers take their temperature at home and adhere to the extra health and safety measures required to enter our building. · Delivery drivers are following strict protocols to minimize the amount of time they spend with colleagues and clients. They no longer enter our kitchen, and maintain at least six feet of space between themselves and a client when making deliveries. Delivery drivers are also wearing masks, and changing gloves and sanitizing their hands in between each delivery. Over the coming weeks and months, we are going to need your support to ensure that we can keep our very vulnerable clients safe and healthy, while meeting the new, critical demand to feed more neighbors. I will have more updates to share in the near future, but in the meantime, I am confident that these extra steps, combined with our already strict approach to health and safety, will allow us to continue serving our clients during the coronavirus pandemic. I tend to agree with him. Why not the armory for example? it even has a yard. I would think the high school would be the last choice. If you have children in the High School or know someone who does please pass this along. We only have one High School. We do not know how long this can go on for. The officials in charge should be planning for the worst not the best case. The decision maker for Cambridge is the City Manager. There are other facilities in Cambridge that could be used that are not unique as the High school is. The Tobin school, The Simoni ice skating rink, the national guard armory among others. None of these including the High School is a perfect fit. There is only one High School. Yes, The War memorial building has been used as a shelter. It has never been used as a treatment center for a highly communicable disease. I am sure that the city will go forward with this regardless of what I or anyone else does. I hope that they are diligent in their cleaning protocols. Extensive swabbing and surface testing of ALL surfaces needs to be done before the building will be able to be used again or the city is putting our children at risk. Every door, door handle, railing, wall, ceiling, locker, stair, furniture, phone, filter, duct, vent cover, chair(top and bottom), table(top and bottom), light fixture, countertop, any maintenance areas that air is circulated through, this is only a partial list. I hope that they are going to filter the exhaust air from the building as well as consistent and regular changing of the existing filters in the HVAC systems. I hope everyone remains safe. Curtatone and the Somerville Board of Health announced an Emergency Order Establishing a Moratorium on Eviction Enforcement in the City of Somerville for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency. The order, which applies to both residential and commercial evictions and goes into effect immediately, prohibits the physical act of eviction within the city limits. Please call 311 or email economicdevelopment(a)somervillema.gov if your commercial landlord is threatening to evict you. CARES Act Creates Paycheck Protection Program The CARES Act, signed into law over the weekend, incorporates many different strategies in the pursuit of providing economic relief. One that will be of most interest to our businesses is the Paycheck Protection Program. Eligible applicants (businesses with fewer than 500 employees, sole proprietors, and independent contractors) can apply for a loan that can be forgiven for the amount the business owner spends on payroll, extra wages to tipped employees, rent, and mortgage interest in the eight weeks after the loan origination date.
