Remember, if you’re dining out, doing takeout or getting delivery, the people serving up the food are part of the front line; keep it in mind when tipping. The Hot Basil with tofu from Yummy Thai. (Photo: Marc Levy) Since Pho House morphed in to the glorious upscale nouvelle Chinese eatery Chalawan, I’ve been searching for solidly traditional Thai food. Cho Cho’s in Lesley’s Porter Square University Hall has solid pad thai, but when I go to the Korean eatery I’m there for the excellent japchae, bibimbap or chicken katsu. I also love Dakzen’s spicy Thai street food in Somerville’s Davis Square for its angry coconut curry bowls. But for your basic pad thai, pad see ew and chicken satay, Yummy Thai on Massachusetts Avenue in North Cambridge has been on my radar quite a bit as of late, mostly for its generous lunch comb boxes – and when I say generous I mean dinner-portion generous. They run roughly $13, and for that you get classic pad thai, pad see ew, drunken noodles or other traditional Thai dishes with your choice of protein, a side of crispy spring rolls, fried gyoza or chicken wings. If you reach a certain order amount, you get free extras such as Thai ice tea (like a bubble tea without the taro bubbles). I was impressed by Yummy’s pad thai, succulent slender-cut noodles with just the right consistency and amount of tamarind paste and fish sauce. But the dish that has me coming back is the Hot Basil. It’s a grapao, with proteins (often ground) stir-fried in spicy oil with basil, peppers and onion; it comes with rice to offset the oil and spice, though I am happy eating it as is, at 2 and 3 on a spiciness scale that goes up to a 5. (I found 2 too plain and 3 about right. I may venture a 4.) I’ve had the grapao only in its chicken form, but am interested in trying the tofu because I think it would be similar to mapo tofu, one of my favorite spicy Chinese dishes. Yummy Thai’s website is a bit old-school, with an HTML 1.0 vibe, but pretty easy to use, and pickup at the restaurant is seamless and safe: Your food is packed up snug in a to-go bag with your name on it (well, it’s attached to the paper bag inside the plastic happy face bag, so you have to peer in) so you can just grab and go to enjoy some generous Thai spiciness. Beside the Hot Basil with tofu, I know I’ll be back because my daughter put her stamp of approval on the satay – can’t be too juicy or too stringy, it’s got to be right in the middle – and a one-stop family win is important. Ruth COVID-19 Vaccine Update for Cambridge Residents 75 and Older We know Cambridge residents are frustrated with the Commonwealth’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout process, and we are too. We will continue to provide updates as we learn new information. Unlike COVID-19 testing where the City can purchase tests and control how we organize testing sites, we have no control or authority over vaccine purchases or the distribution matrix as determined by the State's Vaccine Advisory Group. This is solely controlled by the Commonwealth. At this time, there are no public vaccination sites in Cambridge based on the Commonwealth’s distribution of vaccine supply. The City will continue to work with the State to establish sites in Cambridge depending upon vaccine availability. Due to high demand and constrained vaccine supply, COVID-19 vaccination appointments for persons age 75+ (the first priority group in Phase II) are limited. More appointments will be available based on supply from the Federal Government. While appointments will be added to the State’s website at www.mass.gov/COVIDVaccineMap on a rolling basis, the Governor announced today that thousands of appointments will be added every week on Thursday for the State’s Mass Vaccination Sites at Fenway Park, Gillette Stadium, Eastfield Mall in Springfield, and Doubletree Hotel in Danvers. If you can’t make an appointment at this time, please continue checking the state’s website, but be prepared that it may take several weeks to get an appointment. Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) will be contacting and scheduling COVID vaccinations for patients age 75 and older who receive their care at CHA. Patients can schedule their appointment themselves on CHA's MyCHArt online portal. If a person is age 75 or older and has a primary care doctor at CHA, but does not get contacted, they can call the CHA vaccine hotline at 617-665-1995 to make their first vaccine appointment. Mt. Auburn Hospital (MAH) is rolling out the vaccine to those who qualify for Phase 2 beginning Monday, February 1 .MAH will make calls and/or send text messages to anyone with a primary care provider through them or Beth Israel Lahey Health so that they can register for a vaccine. MAH will have several vaccination clinics in the community for patients, including one at the Marino Center on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. Learn More

We're still breathing a deep sigh of relief post inauguration, and despite the many difficulties that lie ahead, can't help but feel joy that he who shall not be named is now gone. (In related news, we're still in touch with many of our former suppliers and just this week got a notice from the Unemployed Philosophers that all their Trump related merchandise (whoops! named him) is discontinued and 50% off. As for us, we literally threw away the rest of ours the happy Saturday that Biden was declared the official winner.) Although we've always used the "royal we" when writing about Joie, there will now be times I must use "I" — as in — "I now have a little office set up at home." I was asked to be on the Advisory Board of Cambridge Local First, and still have other bits of business to attend to, so spend a hour or two at my desk weekday mornings. (And am always happy to answer emails if you want to say hello.) I'm also keeping up with the gift world, looking at new catalogs to see what we might have been selling, and watching trends, keeping track of who's doing what. If the Winter Gift Show and the Toy Fair hadn't been canceled this year, I would have gone — after all this time, I think I'll always want to maintain some connection to the world of retail. I'm very interested to see what happens in the future, and also want to keep up with some of the great people I've met. The holidays and Christmas without Joie and seeing you customers was definitely strange. I both did and didn't miss it — it was always so crazy and fun — and exhausting! Some of you may know that we always closed at 4 on Christmas Eve, and sat on the floor and drank some champagne and talked for an hour before going our ways, and this year, it was suggested that the usual six of us do a Christmas Eve Zoom version of that tradition. I got a text a few minutes before saying "look on your porch!" I did, and found a bottle of Prosecco and some treats, and then to my surprise, was greeted on Zoom by many many former Joie staff. We had a wonderful, virtual time. We have made changes to our website to reflect that we're no longer open for business, putting most of the writing into the past tense. We updated every item pictured in the now called "What We Sold" with "how to find it now" information, and are thinking of adding an archive of long gone products and their stories — (something to keep us busy until life gets back to a little more normal.) And, what about the book? I'm just now about to begin, having decided to give myself a little space — to organize my new life at home, go through materials I wanted to use, follow electoral politics and worry about our country and what might (then did!) happen before the inauguration and to just relax. And I had to find room in my house for some of the Joie items and memorabilia I brought home when we closed. Being at home pretty much all the time, I've also realized just how many wonderful things from the store I have here from over the years. I'll occasionally post some on our facebook page over the next few months — and back to "we" — "we're" keeping that up and running. So, that's the news for the moment. We hope you all had good holidays, considering the constraints and worries — and wish you all the very very best for a healthy, satisfying, peaceful and eventually — liberating, 2021.
