Explore: The Blue Flower

Members of the A.R.T. help sustain not only our work, but also our mission to expand the boundaries of theater. Because of your support, we wanted you to be the first to see this musical footage from The Blue Flower, before the general public this afternoon. The opportunity to explore our archives has given us the chance to pause and re-experience so many remarkable moments from our productions. We are reminded of the fact that your generosity has made these moments possible and for that we are grateful. Please enjoy the content below and if you can, consider making a gift today.

Join us in celebrating the collective genius of our A.R.T. community—the artists, writers, producers, technicians, organizers, educators, administrators, and audiences—as we dig into our archive and spotlight some of the extraordinary theatrical moments we’ve achieved together.

Today we explore all things The Blue Flower, from a newly released production clip to the historical context that informed the piece’s creation. Co-created by Ruth and Jim Bauer and directed by Will Pomerantz, The Blue Flower is a bold musical that—inspired by the rebellious spirit of the Dada movement—fuses song, video, and art in a story of four friends whose lives are forever changed by the ravages of World War I. The Blue Flower premiered in December 2010 at the American Repertory Theater before opening off-Broadway at Second Stage in 2011.

Newly Released: “Eiffel Tower”

Each week the A.R.T. will release a clip from a past production and this week we are sharing “Eiffel Tower” from The Blue Flower, performed by Teal Wicks (Finding Neverland, The Cher Show).

When we launched our Explore series and invited our community to request what they would like to see, our first request was from long-time patron Deb A., who said she saw the production four times and has since shared the music with her daughter and nephew who both know the soundtrack by heart. We hope that this brings some joy to Deb—and you all—today. Watch Now ▸

A Flower Blooms

“The Bauers are such theater outsiders that even their script, with its illustrations and boxes of text, its varying fonts and dotted arrows running down the margins, looks more like a piece of graphic art than a roadmap for a musical,” writes Laura Collins-Hughes in a feature for The Boston Globe. Director’s Note

“I often think of the theater event as a sort of séance—a place where the mysteries of time, space, and humanity are plumbed to conjure living ghosts that exist beautifully for a few hours,” writes Director Will Pomerantz. Read More ▸
