There were many diverse voices, a variety of concerns by participants, and a peace march. In these tough times people see the need to be empowered. It reminded me of the 60s, though there was not the laser sharp beam that the Vietnam War evoked. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Register to Vote Prior to my Dewey Square visit, I worked with others to register voters in Cambridge. The Voter Registration Deadline for the municipal election is October 19th at 8 p.m - tomorrow. You can register by mail (postmarked by tomorrow) or at the Cambridge Election Commission Office (information at http://www.cambridgema.gov/election [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=5mudaxbab&et=1108197348374&s=1544&e=001EFgsEAh...]). Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m on the city Election Day, November 8. The Temple Place project is part of a $64.5 million statewide investment in expanding affordable housing options and creating construction jobs across Massachusetts. The federal low income housing tax credits and the MA Department of Housing and Community Development housing subsidies together will create 42 affordable units for individuals and families, including at least four extremely low income families, participating in the "Moving to Work" program with the Cambridge Housing Authority. The project is expected to create 102 jobs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Supplemental Budget As House Chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs, I worked with fellow legislators to ensure that nursing home leaves of absence (also known as bed holds) were funded. This ensures that elders in nursing homes who must leave for short period of time can return to their home. Some of the other programs for which I worked to get additional funding were: Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs), that provide congregate services for elders in the community, Massachusetts Cultural Council funding for grants that support many Cambridge arts organizations, salary reserve for human service workers who provide essential services to our most vulnerable residents, Adult Basic Education so ably provided in Cambridge by the Community Learning Center, the Commonwealth's HIV/AIDS programs, and a grant to support Early Education and Cares' application for the federal Early Learning Challenge Grant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Troop Beacon Hill Troop Beacon Hill - The Girl Scouts Celebrate 100 Years ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ National Coming Out Day Mass Equality's National Coming Out Day Supporting the Transgender Equal Rights Bill ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Modernizing HIV Treatment and Prevention At a Briefing on HIV/AIDS Treatment and Prevention with Representative Jason Lewis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Updated Bottle Bill Over 204 cities and towns in Massachusetts have adopted resolutions in support of updating the bottle bill and 77% of the public support it according to a recent poll. Nevertheless there is still resistance to moving it forward in the legislature. I urge you to contact the Speaker of the House to express your support and ask him to bring the bill to the floor for a vote this year. Robert A.
