Dear friends

I hope this finds you well.

I am writing today with lots of good news about Jessica and her students!

Student OpEds in Today's Boston Globe
Today's Boston Globe editorial pages include 4 essays by Jessica's students from this year's We Are America Lowell
plus a short intro by Jessica.
We Are America Lowell - Boston Globe June 21, 2021

If you are interested in reading more stories from We Are America Lowell Spring 2021 or buying the book

If you have a paper copy of today's Globe would you please save it for Jess to give to her students - we bought out Sarah's Market!

Jess submitted her manuscript for Making Americans!
Yesterday, Jessica submitted her manuscript for her book Making Americans to her publisher, Beacon Press
Making Americans examines immigrant education through key historical moments and court decisions, current experiments to improve immigrant education, and profiles of immigrant youth and schools across the country.

Jess submitted about 90% of the book (340 pages) - she will write the closing chapter, conclusion and profile of one more school this summer.

You may recall that Jessica spent the 2019-20 school year on sabbatical researching, visiting schools and beginning to write the book as an Emerson Collective Fellow.

Jessica's  American History students won a statewide Civics Award
One of Jess' ELL American History classes won the
Grassroots Change Award  from Generation Citizen.
Their project was
Stop and Prevent Anti-Asian Hate (Lowell, MA)
They did a video presentation of their work.
WATCH HERE!
As you can imagine, it was  difficult to do these projects this year while the students were remote, with not great internet connections and not having ever met some of their classmates in person.

Jess has been awarded a statewide Civics Award
Jess has been awarded the
Don Salvucci Award for Excellence in Promoting Civics
by the Massachusetts Council on the Social Studies

The End of School
The last day of school was last Wednesday, a grueling year for students, teachers and administrators. The fall offers the promise of a better year for all.
Jess plans to return again to teach at Lowell High School at the end of the summer.

Thank you as always for your interest and support of Jessica's work.

all the very best
