Subject: [ACN] Tonight, 5:30pm! 10/24 & 10/29, Multifamily Info

I hope you can attend the virtual meeting tonight at 5:3pm on the proposed Multifamily zoning- see below.

Cambridge is considering zoning to allow 6 floors of market-rate housing in all parts of the city, as well as decreasing the amount of review of new buildings; buildings with more than 10 units would have 20% Inclusionary housing.  The Council has sent the proposal to the Planning Board and Council’s Ordinance Committee.  Because this is a big change, many hearings are scheduled; please see list below.

The Cambridge Housing Justice Coalition has raised concerns about the up-zoning causing displacement and gentrification, and has proposed changes to the zoning to reduce those harms and prioritize creating affordable housing for the people most in need, as well as a new program of city-funded housing vouchers.

Below is info on 2 city events on 10/24 and 10/29 about the proposed Multifamily up-zoning; they should be a good way to learn more about it and give input.

The next scheduled Council meetings on the Multifamily upzoning petition are:

10/31, Economic Development and University Relations Committee12 noon, to discuss the Economics of Real Estate: Housing, Zoning, and the Economic Impact of Zoning Proposals.
11/12, Planning Board, 11/12, 6:30pm
11/19, Ordinance Committee, 2pm
12/4, Ordinance Committee, 2:30pm

These hearings will be times when you can share your opinion on the proposed Multifamily upzoning.

Check the Multifamily project website (cambridgema.gov/multifamilyzoning) for details about meetings and for other information. You can also sign up for future e-mail announcements about this zoning proposal.

Citywide Multifamily Housing Proposal Info Sessions

The City Council is discussing a proposed set of changes to allow multifamily housing in all neighborhoods of the city.  The proposal has these main goals:

  • Allow multifamily housing (such as apartments and condos) in all neighborhoods of the city.
  • Allow residential buildings of up to 6 stories in all neighborhoods and districts of the city.
  • Remove other requirements that make it more difficult to build multifamily housing, such as minimum lot sizes, limits on the number of housing units and amount of floor area.
  • Continue to encourage the creation of permanently affordable housing through the inclusionary housing requirements and Affordable Housing Overlay (AHO).

The Community Development Department is hosting two information sessions for members of the public to learn about the proposal and provide their input.
