Cambridge Public Safety Agencies Share Halloween Safety Tips

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., October 25, 2022 – When it comes to Halloween, safety should always be at the top of mind for residents who celebrate, particularly for those parents and guardians with children who plan to go door-to-door for trick-or-treating. While Cambridge was recently ranked by the Chamber of Commerce as one of the safest cities in the country for trick-or-treating (#2 overall), we want to ensure a safe and fun experience for the whole family. 

This Halloween, the Cambridge Police, Fire and Emergency Communications Departments would like to remind the community of the following safety tips.

• Young children should trick-or-treat with an adult or older child.
• Never trick-or-treat alone -- Always travel with a partner or partners.
• Stay visible so that others can see you. Carry a flashlight or glow stick.
• Always be extra careful when in costume and passing a heat source or open flame. Allow plenty of clearance.
• Avoid the use of open-flame candles. Use battery-operated candles or flashlights.
• Make sure that your decorations don’t block exits. Also, place decorations away from heat sources. Most decorations are combustible.
• Carry a cell phone - just in case you need to call for help.

As always, please call 911 immediately for any emergency or to report a crime in progress. You can also pull the nearest city fire alarm box.
