Sugar plums, corn, cantaloupe, watermelon, cherry tomatoes, slicing heirloom tomatoes. Who's at the market? Stow Greenhouses are back with their beautiful hybrid lilies. (A fact I learned recently - cut flowers have a greater transportation impact than many other food goods; because flowers must be fresh, imported cut flowers are flown rather than trucked or boated to the U.S. That's a good reason to buy local flowers.) Ruggles Hill Creamery and Valicenti Organico are the bi-weekly vendors. What's cooking?
From 12:30-1:30, Harvest's pastry chef Brian Mercury will be serving peach cornmeal shortcake with vanilla whipped mascarpone. Stop by the chef demonstration table to taste. From 1:30-2:30, Harvard Garden interns Emelie, Becky, and Fran will be demonstrating pickling with produce from the Harvard Community Garden. Stop by the market manager table with a mason jar (they'll have a few extra) to pickle turnips and dill or okra, peppers, and onions.
Can you name the plant pictured at this email's header? Here's a hint: featured in last week's chef demonstration, this plant grows wild in backyards and is featured in many European, Middle Eastern, Asian, and Mexican dishes. Answer provided at the market manager table. See you at the market, Louisa ++++ ++++ ++++ ++++ ++++ ++++ The market meets in front of the Harvard Museum of Natural History, at 26 Oxford Street, every Tuesday, RAIN OR SHINE, from June 19-October 30, 12:00-6:00 pm. The market accepts WIC & SFMNP coupons and SNAP (food stamps). Are you a <https://www.facebook.com/harvardfarmersmarkets> fan of us on Facebook?
