Hi All, Speaking of local business, come out to support the businesses of North Cambridge - including mine, Nüssli118° - this Saturday from 11-3 from Pemberton Market to Century Bank. We will be giving out free samples, Spindler Confections will be handing out free goodie bags to the first 50 customers, Century Bank will be doing face painting and Pemberton’s will have many of its vendors handing out free samples. It will be a fun event. Hope to see you! I appreciate your perspective Ruth and don't disagree with your insights.
But I think there also other forces in play such the exorbitant price
of buying property or renting retail space (for example) in our
neighborhood that result in new boutique businesses that essentially cater to the 1%.
I certainly don't have easy answers and I wish this couple best of luck
with their new business venture. I'm just noticing how it's less
plausible every day for middle class families to live here and I think
that's a loss.

SB,
I agree with you, partially, especially about the gentrification of
our neighborhood and it¹s effects.
We will still go to Christina¹s for our ice cream stash, but budget
permitting we will buy a small cup/cone from time to time from
Honeycomb Creamery, because it is so different, so creative, and
around the corner.
They are also a very nice, hard working couple (I met them, heard
about what they do); the ingredients are all top notch and are from
local farms.
To some extent, we are all shocked when confronted with the real
price for handmade, locally-sourced food, instead the air-filled,
overly sweet and fake stuff (speaking of ice cream) at the grocery
store.
I grew up on a small farm, as did my husband, and we know hard that
work is, and the risks farmers take. Within reason, and budget
permitting, I will happily pay more at the farmer¹s markets, but many
of our staples still must come from Star.
We are just tring to eat less of it all, make better food choices,
waste lessŠ But comparatively speaking, I think Americans have
gotten lulled into paying less for both food and clothes than most of
the folks in Europe, for example.
Our clothes are cheaper, for example, because they are being made for
cut-rate prices halfway around the world (never mind the jobs we lost
here). Same thing with big, factory farms.

I really do appreciate and try to support "local" businesses, but
'small batch' artisanal ice cream for 15 bucks a pint? Really? It is
striking to observe how such changes along Mass Ave unfortunately
also mirror the end of working and middle class life in our city.
