Neighbors, I wanted to extend the clean up request below to Buena Vista/Upland Rd/Cambridge Terrace (and Richdale) neighbors. The Porter Square Neighborhood Association asked only that folks let them know they were coming, so as to have materials on hand. You may choose to join in the cleanup of the Porter Square area, or alternately work on cleaning up your own street. I have made the same suggestion to the Richdale Avenue folks. I would also suggest that participants bring gloves, refuse bags, etc. just in case there are not enough supplies. I have been warned that the work is hard on the knees and backs, as much of the time is spent bending down to pick up things. If you can participate, just tell Susan I sent you! Happy Spring, Ruth From: psna-bounces@lists.portersquare.net [mailto:psna-bounces@lists.portersquare.net] On Behalf Of Susan Hunziker Sent: Wednesday, April 15, 2009 12:32 PM To: psna@lists.portersquare.net Subject: [PSNA] Clean Up Porter Square: May 2, 10-1 (Rain date: May 3, 1-4) A couple of years ago, PSNA and the congregation of church where we used to meet sponsored a spring cleanup day in Porter Square. I've been threatening to do another one, but have not gotten around to it. Larry Field brought this citywide effort to my attention and asked whether PSNA was going to join in. http://www.cleancambridge.org/about-clean-cambridge After checking it out, we decided to do so in conjunction with the Ward 10 Democratic Committee. WHEN Saturday, May 2 from 10-1 RAIN DATE Sunday, May 3 from 1-4 WHERE TO MEET Gather in the park at the T stop. WHERE WE'LL BE WORKING The T park and the sidewalks and gutters between Upland and Beech. If we have lots of volunteers, we can extend this effort to the residential streets that run off Mass Ave. THEN WHAT With any luck, some free refreshments afterward at a location TBD WHAT TO BRING Work gloves, large trash bags, brooms, and dust pans will be provided. If you have knee pads, you might want to use them (see below). SIGN UP BEFORE YOU SHOW UP We need to know how many folks will be joining us so that we have enough equipment available. HOW TO SIGN UP To participate, please contact me (shunziker@comcast.net) and let me know where you want to remove trash: + Along Mass Ave near Porter Square + An area in Porter Square that is not on Mass Ave + An area in Porter Square that is not in Cambridge WHAT WOULD BE GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU ENLIST When the winter glaciers melted, the trash embedded in them was released. A fair amount of that stuff has been removed, though much remains. As I look around, it appears that most of the local trash consists of cigarette butts and bits of broken glass. Thus, you would probably be doing more crouching and bending over than sweeping. That might be difficult for folks whose knees or lower backs have seen better days but would be easy for kids. HOW TO PARTICIPATE IF YOU WON'T BE IN TOWN THAT WEEKEND Some time between Patriot's Day and Memorial Day, take a plastic bag with you when you run errands in the 'hood and fill it with the trash that you encounter. Put the bag in a public trash can or the one at your house. Do this at least twice. --------------------------------------- "[Poetry] is a way of remembering that which it would impoverish us to forget." -- Robert Frost
