SPRING PLANNING + UPDATES

Given what we have learned and because we do not anticipate significant improvements in public health conditions locally or nationally between now and early 2021,
we have decided that Lesley will remain mostly remote for the remainder of the 2020-21 academic year. I realize that many of you have hoped that the pandemic would be under better control by now and that we would be able to return to a more normal way of life sooner than later. But, based on what we know today, it does not seem prudent to reopen campus next semester.  This coming Spring semester, we will again offer limited access to campus facilities and the option to stay in hotel rooms for students enrolled in some courses at the College of Art and Design.  Additional students gaining access to campus facilities include those in the Threshold program, winter/spring athletes, as well as, graduate students in low-residency programs.

More information about art and design undergraduate and graduate program course offerings with specified campus access will be available soon.

FALL/20 PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Lesley Art + Design is committed to inviting majority Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC)-identified, trans and underrepresented artists and designers to engage in co-curricular programs in order to nurture LA+D’s diverse student community inclusively.  We acknowledge our role as artists and designers in the context of and in response to systemic racism and inequities that we have been experiencing for hundreds of years by enacting DEI best practices to the extent of our abilities and anti-racist approaches to art and design education.

EXHIBITIONS + WORKSHOPS + PANELS

#BlackLivesMatter is an ongoing installation created this summer which features over 135 names of individuals, only a small fraction of Black lives taken by police brutality and hate crimes.  The project in the Lunder Arts Center’s street-level windows of Roberts Gallery faces the courtyard of the main entrance and the sidewalk along Massachusetts Ave.  The statement of solidarity with #BLM is accompanied by a narrative about the history of slavery in Massachusetts, systemic racism then and now, and anti-racist resources.

MARCH is a large-scale vinyl mural about a moment in the life of the late Civil Rights activist and Congressman John Lewis.  The image excerpted from the award-winning autobiographical graphic novel series March (Top Shelf Production, 2016), illustrated by Nate Powell, is installed in the Lunder Arts Center’s street-facing windows on Roseland Street and created in partnership with the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE).  Lesley Art + Design and the Illustration + Visual Narrative department have partnered with MICE since its inception in 2010 and recognize the value in exposing students, alumni, future students and the broader community to the varied world of contemporary comics.

Lesley Art + Design considers MICE to be a critical partner in expanding the importance of visual narratives, transdisciplinary storytelling, and the role of artists and designers in a diverse society.

OPEN CALL

VISUAL VOICES: LA+D and the Art of Protest

The right to protest is integral to democracy.  It helps shape civil, political, economic, cultural and social structures and often unveils injustices and corruption within these systems.  This year, we have witnessed the importance of protest by exposing racism and human rights violations through the Black Lives Matter movement.  Since the 2016 presidential election, we've seen the number of protests grow exponentially against police brutality, systemic racism, climate change, limited access to healthcare, gun ownership and corruption within our political system to name a few, as well as, growth in important movements such as women's rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and the right to vote.  In all instances, protest posters hae played a key role in spreading awareness to create positive change.

This fall, the offices of Exhibitions and Community Engagement at Lesley Art + Design invite art and design students, faculty and staff to submit original protest posters for a pop-up exhibition to be installed in the street-facing windows of the Roberts Gallery.  The exhibition visible from Roseland St and Massachusetts Ave in Porter Square, Cambridge will visually represent a selection of the voices at the College who demand justice, safety, and equality.

Mail-in submission deadline is October 30 (extended).

Submission Requirements:

  • All works on paper up to 24"x36"(inches) will be considered.
  • Those working digitally can submit a digital file via wetransfer by Oct 21 to andrew.mroczek@lesley.edu that we'll print for you.
  • Those creating physical pieces should plan to mail their posters in a tube to the following address by Oct 30.

    Andrew Mroczek, ATTN: Poster Exhibit

29 Everett Street, Cambridge, MA 02138
