During this crisis, the City of Cambridge, the Red Cross, the Central Square Business Association, the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and our many community partners have joined forces to help the YWCA. The YWCA has an immediate need for monetary support to make immediate building repairs and to provide the critical support services our residents need. Damages from the flooding are estimated to exceed $100,000, which we anticipate will be covered by insurance. However, insurance will not cover the immediate cost of additional staffing that the YWCA has needed to support our residents who have been living in temporary locations all over Cambridge and Boston. Additionally, the YWCA leases space to two other community nonprofit organizations, as well as dance, martial arts, and Pilates studios, which have all been temporarily displaced from their work spaces due to the damage. We also expect to incur addition costs related to putting preventative measures into place to help ensure that this type of disaster does not reoccur. The YWCA staff has been working around the clock to ensure that all of the 103 women who call the Tanner Residence home have been safely housed and cared for until the building has become habitable. Getting everyone home again and providing the necessary services is our ongoing challenge.
