Our office will be hosting this event in conjunction with the Federal Trade Commission, Executive Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and the United States Postal Service to promote awareness about identity theft and the continuing need to protect personal information. This event will offer Cambridge-area residents the opportunity to properly dispose of documents like bank statements, tax records, and other paperwork that may include personal data like Social Security numbers or account information. The event will also include a short press conference at 10 a.m. featuring a group of speakers from local, state and federal government agencies. Last year, over 11 million Americans were the victims of identity theft. Many identity thieves find their victims information on credit card statements, medical billing statements or other pieces of paper which are discarded every day. This event presents a tremendous opportunity for citizens to shred these documents, protecting themselves against damage to their credit profile, which can make it difficult to get necessary financing for homes, automobiles and even student loans. Please feel free to distribute the enclosed flyer or post it on your neighborhoods website. If you have any questions regarding this event, or if you would like to request an electronic copy of the flyer, please contact Corey R. Pilz at 617-349-6150 or at <mailto:cpilz@cambridgema.gov> cpilz@cambridgema.gov. We look forward to seeing you at the event! Warmest Regards, Laura M.
