NOTE: this is a date change to one day earlier than originally scheduled. You can help by taking this action if you haven't already!! FIRST: Pass this email along to at least THREE of your Cambridge friends and acquaintances – who are not members of Mothers Out Front – and ask them to reach out to City Councillors to support Green Roofs in Cambridge. We need to assemble a huge and diverse chorus of voices letting public officials hear that residents throughout Cambridge support vegetative or bio-solar (solar panels and vegetation) roofs atop new buildings that are larger than 25,000 square feet in Cambridge.WHAT: Contact our City Councilors via email or phone call to advocate for the Green Roof Ordinance Amendment, 22.30. Click here for a template.WHO: All of the City Councillors sit on the Ordinance Committee, where zoning issues are discussed and voted on. Click here for the City Council contact page. Or email all councilors at CityCouncil@CambridgeMA.GOVWHY: On March 31, the Ordinance Committee will determine if our revised Green Roofs Ordinance 22.30 goes on to a final vote by City Council. Hearing from YOU and others – as Green Roof supporters – gives us a HUGE boost in going before the committee members to present our proposal and respond to questions. READ: There should not be a debate about vegetative vs. solar roofs. The Revised Green Roof Ordinance in Brief Requires a green (vegetative or bio-solar) roof on at least 80% of NEW construction that's 25,000+ square feet. Allows exemptions for rooftop features such as elevator over-rides, vent stacks, skylights, and mechanical equipment. Provides an option for developers to pay into the Affordable Housing Trust to be used for green roofs on affordable and public housing. In addition to extensive research on green roof policies in other cities, we have met with City Councillors, affordable housing advocates, Cambridge Community Development, design and zoning specialists, roofers, green roof builders, and numerous others experts, incorporating their input into the language of the revised ordinance.
