I did want to get back to you for a few reasons. First and foremost, to let you know that we have been monitoring this situation very closely. To that end, we have been deploying officers to this area during the times of day when we think these incidents are occurring. We have also been sending officers out to specifically to perform surveillance activities in neighborhood in addition to our normal patrol deployments. The detectives and members of our Crime Analysis Unit had developed a suspect who we think is responsible for these thefts. As you would have it, patrol officers arrested this subject for unrelated charges on late Friday night into Saturday morning. This not to say that we have stopped these incidents from occurring. In addition to our efforts, it is vitally important that the residents take an active role in helping us protect their property, and more importantly, be somewhat vigilant in reporting anything that appears to be out of the ordinary. This would also include calling us when there people who are not familiar to the area and who seem to be neighborhood for no specific purpose. We can certainly estimate when these thefts are taking place, but the intelligence that you and your neighbors can provide us is invaluable. It is also a very effective means of driving our patrol resources to areas of the city where they prevent or intervene into situations that may appear to be suspicious. Over the next couple of weeks, are hoping to also do the neighborhood tour to see what other things we can identify throughout the neighborhood much less appealing to those who may have designs on committing criminal activity. I hope you find this helpful. I also wanted to assure you and your neighbors, including those on Upland Road what we have been doing in response to the latest uptick in the thefts taking place. Please let me know if you have any additional concerns or questions. R. Haas Police Commissioner -----Original Message----- From: Jeffrey Lipshaw [mailto:jlipshaw@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, March 27, 2009 8:17 AM To: Haas, Robert Cc: Bernier, Holly; Decker, Marjorie Subject: Spate of Thefts on Richdale Avenue Dear Commissioner Haas: I'm going to take advantage of your interest in our street, and ask you to help us. Our newly-formed list serv has revealed that there has been a spate of property crime here in the last week, mainly tires being stolen off of cars on the street. There was an incident at 113 Richdale in which four tires were stolen off a car, and last night two tires were stolen off a car in front of the co-housing at 175. I saw it this morning when I walked the dogs at 5:45 a.m. - I wondered why a car was sitting there with the jacks on the street side and no tires. Clearly there is a pattern here, and I'm hoping you can put some resources to helping us. Thanks again. Best, Jeffrey M. It is believed to have happened at around 11:30 at night. The Honda had steel rims. The two cars next to it which have plastic rims a Honda and a Toyota, were not touched. The owner has installed motion detector lights over the car which he hopes will discourage a third attempt. Be watchful.
