St. Fleur, the first Haitian-born American elected to state office in the nation, recently returned from Haiti and will address efforts to rebuild the country's infrastructure following the devastating earthquake of January 12. Her discussion is titled "Building Haiti Differently," and she will be joined by Jean Lionel Pressoir, President of Fondestha, a foundation assisting orphaned and displaced children. Representative St. Fleur will share her experience in visiting Haiti in the earthquake's aftermath, and address relief efforts in the context of a nation already struggling with crises in poverty, health care and infrastructure. This event is free and the public is cordially invited. St. Fleur was elected to the House of Representatives in 1999, representing Dorchester, and has served as Vice-Chair of Ways and Means, Chair of the Education Committee, and is a strong advocate for quality education. Since the earthquake, she has been a leader in focusing Massachusetts relief efforts, focusing on coordinating those efforts with measured goals and outcomes, and working with the Haitian government towards a sustainable recovery. She recently returned from a trip to Haiti with the National Haitian American Elected Officials Network, and has coordinated her efforts with the White House and former President Bill Clinton, the United Nations Envoy for Haiti relief.
