Ruth, Thanks for forwarding this article to me. I hope everyone understands the impact protected bike lanes will have on Porter Square and in fact our entire city. These plans are being implemented with no input from businesses and residence. We had to fight to have the Bike Lane Ordinance amended to include input from all stakeholders and to have a report on the impacts of the protected bike lanes is having on residents, businesses, traffic, and bike safety. Now we need to hold the city council to meet those amendments. With the removal of all parking and loading along Mass Ave, many businesses will suffer and close. See the attached testimonials of the businesses in Central Square where their parking and loading was removed. Waypoint, a restaurant in Central Square has lost 40% of their business, Fast Phils in North Cambridge, down 70%. I just want an inclusive process that takes the needs of everyone dependent on the roads into account. I want safe roads that serve everyone, less congestion, less greenhouse gas emissions, and a more beautiful cityscape. I hope everyone on the listserv has a look at these testimonials and looks at what happened on North Mass Ave. Here in Porter Square – the proposal is to make Upland a one way and add metered parking on Upland close to Mass Ave. to make up for the loss of all parking along Mass Ave between Beech and Roseland. They will create a protected bike lane, a dedicated bus lane effectively reducing cars to one lane each way.
