HOODIE TO HIJAB: Exploring Representations of Muslim American Women Art + Social Justice Film Series
Thursday, December 1 | noon – 1pm | Lunder Arts Center | Screening Room 117
Presented by Lesley University College of Art and Design in partnership with the Islamic Council of New England. Co-sponsored by the Lesley University Diversity Council FREE and open to the general public
Mehdi Ghadyanloo’s satellite exhibition of screen prints at the Lunder Arts Center, presented in conjunction with his Greenway mural Spaces of Hope, which he recently completed at Dewey Square Park – what he describes as a gift of peace to Boston from the international Muslim community – sets the stage for this month’s Art + Social Justice Film program Hoodie to Hijab: Exploring Representations of Muslim American Women. December’s screening and conversation, the 6th in the series, includes a YouTube short and video art by Haleh Jamali, and asks us to expand our visual perceptions and projections of cultural, religious and gender identities as artists, designers and viewers. LUCAD BFA Illustration student Sara Alfageeh shares her own experience and artwork alongside community and guest speakers from the Islamic Council of New England, whose core mission for the past 30 years has been to address harmful perceptions of the Muslim community and counteract Islamophobia in the U.S.
