Harvard University Community Updates Dear Neighbors, I am pleased to invite you to a number of exciting events and activities on Harvard's campus over the next few weeks. These events include the John Harvard Book Celebration featuring faculty lectures and youth programming, public arts performances, and science exhibits. We hope that you are able to take advantage of these opportunities to join us. Below are details on a selection of these events: Cambridge Science Festival - April 20-29 Harvard has been a sponsor of the Cambridge Science Festival since its inception in 2007. Harvard is hosting more than a dozen programs during the annual 10-day festival, including special museum events with stand-up comedians and exploration stations at the Harvard Observatory. For a full calendar of events beginning on Friday, April 20, click here. Slow Dancing Installation - April 20-29 Come see the Boston premiere of David Michalek's large-scale installation featuring slow-motion video portraits of dancers from around the world in front of Widener Library in Harvard Yard. Arts First - April 26-29 The annual event includes over 225 music, theater, dance, film, and visual arts events, most that are free of charge and open to the public. Festival highlights include: A Performance Fair and Dance Festival with over 100 free music, dance, theater and film events around campus; Bandfest at the Holyoke Outdoor Stage; exhibitions and outdoor art installations around campus; and dramatic productions indoors and out. For locations and more information, click here. John Harvard Book Celebration - Through May 22 As part of Harvard's 375th anniversary and in celebration of its close ties to the Boston and Cambridge communities, the university launched the John Harvard Book Celebration in partnership with the Boston and Cambridge public libraries to include faculty lectures, varied youth programming, and book donations across both library systems. Each of the 34 branch library branches in Boston and Cambridge will host at least one element of the program between January and the end of May 2012. And through the program the university will donate 400 new books to the two cities' library systems, as John Harvard did 375 years ago to help form Harvard College. The series launched on 1/10 with President Faust's Civil War presentation "Telling War Stories: Reflections of a Civil War Historian" at the main branch of the Cambridge Public Library. Some of the additional presentations already given by many notable faculty, including Dean Hammonds, Steven Pinker, Dr. Jerome Groopman, and Dr. Pamela Hartzband. Upcoming presentations include Diane Paulus of the A.R.T. on 5/8 and Dean of the Graduate School of Education, Kathleen McCartney on 5/15 both at the man branch of the Cambridge Public Library. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Free Compost & Composting Tips Composting yard waste and food scraps is a great way to reduce waste and curb climate change. Be sure to maintain the right ratio: 3 parts "browns" (i.e. leaves, shredded cardboard, crumpled paper bags) to 1 part "greens" (food scraps, grass). Always bury greens or cover up with browns. No meat, bones, fat, dairy or foods cooked with oil or butter. Rinse out eggshells. Pemberton Farms at 2225 Mass Ave sells the bin that DPW used to offer, for $60. See more composting tips online! Also, Cambridge residents can get free compost in small quantities at the Recycling Center during open hours: Tues/Thurs 4pm-7:30pm and Sat 9am-4pm. Bring your own containers. Help Out - Be a Recycling Volunteer We need your help to sign residents up to receive this newsletter. Please consider volunteering at a community event! It's fun because you can enjoy the atmosphere, educate people and get a free t-shirt.
