Re: [Neighbors] [Porter square] 2072 Mass Ave

Thanks to those who have called out the slander here. It is a shame for Sean to have to have to defend his life story. I think it might be humbling for any of us to compare his to our contributions to our city. I now have people saying, ENOUGH! So please stop this line of attack. Derek, If this is your foray into the next CC election with cheap shots on irrelevant campaign contributions, just take it somewhere else. And make sure no one in your family ever contributed to any candidate anywhere. Frankly, I have contributed to both McGovern and to Carlone and I think a lot of Cambridge citizens and business owners have, and found ourselves agreeing with or arguing against them at various times. Those contributions are all very transparent, and most of them too small to influence anything. Finally, if we are to continue discussing the proposed 100% affordable development at 2072 Mass Avenue, can we limit it to the site, the building's design and other relevant issues? North Cambridge needs more housing simple as that. 100 years ago that whole block was 3 & 4 stories of first floor retail and working class housing up above. The snobbery of some of today’s residents has to stop. Just because your house is now worth millions doesn’t give you the right to effectively ban the development of additional housing for the less well off in the community or for that matter, the wealthy individuals who may want to live in this neighborhood. If the developers were building 8 stories of luxury condos that should also be allowed. The plans are spectacular, the building fits in well with the surrounding street scale. We need to move forward and keep developing the neighborhood to keep Cambridge a vibrant multi cultural and diverse community where a person making $50k can eat, shop and enjoy the city alongside their neighbors who earn $300k and up. Quit the faux self righteous arguments about keeping the neighborhood as is, because it didn’t look anything like this 100 years ago and won’t look like this in another 100 years and now the latest attempt to attack the developers and city officials as being corrupt. We need more development and it’s fantastic that we have a local company working to improve the neighborhoods we all love. Chris Fitzsimons

Neighbors,
I find it unfortunate that individuals like Mr. Kopon would try to tarnish my name and reputation without having the common courtesy to reach out to me and find out about who I am and what my family has contributed to Cambridge. Typically I ignore this type of slander because it usually only serves to bring attention to those who are desperately trying to be heard and gain relevance. That said, this is now the third time you have tried to disparage me and I will not be bullied by Cambridge's newest opportunist seeking to gain relevance by playing gotcha.
First, my family has been in Cambridge since the early 1900's and we have been civically involved in Community Activism and organizing in Cambridge. My grandmother Agnes Darlington, who immigrated from Barbados to Cambridge in the 1950's was one of founding members of Pentecostal Tabernacle in Area 4/The Port. My mother served for decades as a member of the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House and many other civic boards/committees including the Cambridge Police Citizen Advisory Board, The Women's Suffrage Committee, The Cambridge Health Alliance Board and countless other civic boards and committees.
Not growing up in Cambridge, Mr. Kopon wouldn't understand that for many of us community involvement and service is part of who we are and what we do. For those who recently moved to Cambridge and are not interested in its rich history, it is easy to make baseless accusations. What an email or phone call to me would have highlighted for Mr. Kopon is that me and my family have supported Candidates since I can remember. Holding signs and phone banking for candidates is what we did and hopefully my children will do. Further, my personal experience as a cantabrigian is that contributing to candidates whose ideas you respect and value is also part of being active in your community, not something to be ashamed of. Most importantly I believe my volunteer work as a former board member of the Cambridge Children and Family Services (CFCS), Foundry Consortium, Pentecostal Tabernacle legal counsel, Cambridge Historical Society Board Member and Cambridge Zoning Board of Appeals Associate Member has provided me more access and influence than any campaign contribution.
Regarding Dennis Carlone, he is Councilor who I had great respect for and considered an ally in doing good in the Cambridge Community. He and I have divergent views on the future of Cambridge and what good looks like. Given our differing ages, world view and racial background this is not surprising. As an African American resident of Cambridge I will continue to support Candidates that I respect and that are committed to furthering racial and socio-econmic diversity, representation and inclusion in this City I love. This attempt to smear and silence me will not work.
Happy New Year to all. Hopefully 2021 can bring more community building and honest discourse about how to live out the progressive ideals that us Cantabrigians used to hold so dearly.

Neighbors,
Below is an op-ed from Dennis Carlone about the gigantic housing development proposed for Porter Square. The developer of this property, Sean Hope, has given money to Alana Mallon, Marc McGovern, and significant contributions to Denise Simmons.
Mr. Hope also attempted to give money to Dennis Carlone. But my understanding is that Dennis returned the money, since such contributions are clearly improper.
Whatever your opinion about this particular development, I hope we can all agree that our trusted Counselors monetizing the zoning in our neighborhood by taking money from a for-profit developer is unsightly and inappropriate.
Happy New Year everyone, Derek
