Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation - "Salt and Pepper" Tower Dismantling Preparations Begin March 28
You are subscribed to Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.Massachusetts Department of Transportation ADVISORYFor Immediate Release Wednesday, March 25, 2015 Preparations Begin for Downstream ³Salt and Pepper² Tower Dismantling on March 28 with Bicycle and Pedestrian Longfellow Bridge Travel Modifications Beginning on Saturday, March 28, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will begin preparing to dismantle the downstream ³salt and pepper² towers as part of the Longfellow Bridge Restoration Project. MassDOT¹s contractor, White-Skanska-Consigli JV (WSC), has coordinated with the cities of Cambridge and Boston, as well as the MBTA, to begin dismantling the downstream towers this spring. There are a number of steps to prepare for the dismantling. The first is to shift pedestrians from the sidewalk to make room for a work zone and install scaffolding before dismantling the towers. WSC will create a shared space by enlarging the bike lane used for travel from Boston to Cambridge near each tower to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. A concrete barrier will separate the shared space from automobile traffic. Flexible stanchions and lane markings will distinguish bicyclist and pedestrian dedicated areas of the shared space. In areas of the bridge that are distant from the tower work zones, pedestrians will continue to use the sidewalk. Bicyclists and pedestrians should use caution when traveling in the shared space to ensure the safety of all bridge users. The shift will be in place through 2015.Once the shared space is created and scaffolding is installed, MassDOT will begin removing the tower stones for storage, cleaning and repair. The work is anticipated for April, and will be weather dependent. Additional updates will be provided in advance of the dismantling. The upstream towers were dismantled in March 2014. They are currently being restored and will be reassembled later this year. Stones from the downstream towers will be restored and repaired and the towers will be reassembled at the end of the project. To learn about the Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation Project and construction process, view this animation <http://links.govdelivery.com/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwM...
