33 Richdale at Cambridge Historical Commission 4 December!

Dear Neighbors! As you recall, almost a year ago, the Cambridge Historical Commission voted to initiate a landmark designation study for 33 Richdale Avenue (the erstwhile Hathaway Bakery). This effectively was the turning point in our neighborhood’s advocacy to save the building from demolition, prevent the site’s over-development, and protect the character of our established neighborhood. There are a few remaining steps. On Thursday 4 December at 6PM the Historical Commission will review the CHC staff’s report and consider whether or not to recommend that the City Council designate 33 Richdale a landmark. (If recommended by the CHC, and if approved by a vote of the City Council, landmark designation would not affect the current project but would mean that any future changes to the exterior of the building would be subject to review and approval by the CHC). The CHC staff report and its recommendation will be online soon. Acknowledging the architectural character of the former Hathaway Bakery building and designating it a landmark will provide our neighborhood one important element of protection. As we saw last December, the CHC does their best work when the room is full! Please join us at the Cambridge Historical Commission hearing to support landmarking 33 Richdale with your voices and with your presence!
