I realize that many of you have hoped that the pandemic would be under better control by now and that we would be able to return to a more normal way of life sooner than later. But, based on what we know today, it does not seem prudent to reopen campus next semester. This coming Spring semester, we will again offer limited access to campus facilities and the option to stay in hotel rooms for students enrolled in some courses at the College of Art and Design. Additional students gaining access to campus facilities include those in the Threshold program, winter/spring athletes, as well as, graduate students in low-residency programs. The project in the Lunder Arts Center’s street-level windows of Roberts Gallery faces the courtyard of the main entrance and the sidewalk along Massachusetts Ave. The statement of solidarity with #BLM is accompanied by a narrative about the history of slavery in Massachusetts, systemic racism then and now, and anti-racist resources. *MARCH *is a large-scale vinyl mural about a moment in the life of the late Civil Rights activist and Congressman John Lewis. It helps shape civil, political, economic, cultural and social structures and often unveils injustices and corruption within these systems. This year, we have witnessed the importance of protest by exposing racism and human rights violations through the Black Lives Matter movement. Since the 2016 presidential election, we've seen the number of protests grow exponentially against police brutality, systemic racism, climate change, limited access to healthcare, gun ownership and corruption within our political system to name a few, as well as, growth in important movements such as women's rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and the right to vote. In all instances, protest posters hae played a key role in spreading awareness to create positive change. This fall, the offices of Exhibitions and Community Engagement at Lesley Art + Design invite art and design students, faculty and staff to submit original protest posters for a pop-up exhibition to be installed in the street-facing windows of the Roberts Gallery.
