09/29/2013 20:54 INCIDENT 13007671 ROBBERY, ARMED & MASKED c265 S17BUENA VISTA PK A Cambridge resident was walking home from Porter Square area and was robbed by 2 males at gunpoint. Thanks for getting more info Ruth. This is really upsetting, especially the gun part. I asked my son, who was walking in that exact location 15 minutes before, if he or his girlfriend had noticed anyone suspicious and they hadn't. Our house, like yours Ruth, overlooks that intersection so I'm surprised the police didn't come by canvassing for witnesses. So now we are confused about where this happened. From what Susan Cory says, it sounds as though it may have happened near the intersection of Upland/BVP/Washington Ave. Does anyone know exactly where it happened? there was also an armed robbery a few weeks ago at the corner store on Walden. Wonder if it's connected? They got a picture of that guy. We should keep in mind how unusual this is though--violent crime seems to happen maybe once or twice per year in the whole Porter Square area. Attached is a graphic from the 2012 Police Report showing all reported gun crimes in Cambridge from 2010-2012. I believe the one assault listed for Porter Square involved a fight that broke out late at night at "Gourmet Express" on Upland and Mass. Ave. in which one guy had a bullet graze his butt. Bike thefts, car thefts, and home invasions are, sadly, not so uncommon in our area, but violent crime thankfully is quite rare. I'm not going to significantly revise my sense of the dangerousness of the neighborhood unless we see more such incidents. I concur, Tom. We are living in an urban area and, however peaceful it is on Avon Hill most of the time, these kinds of things happen, hopefully rarely. Women and kids especially should minimize walking at night alone, and we all need to be mindful of our surroundings. You know what I know, directly from the officer at the desk. He did not have an exact location just the two street names-Upland and BVP. When I know more I will let you all know.
